“What do people expect??”
Reviewed August 10, 2012

I am not going to review Sivota itself because previous people have summed it up in a positive light and I could not agree more. Fantastic place with very few English and really traditionally Greek. Perfect for us.
I am going to concentrate on the Mourtemeno Hotel but first a word about Avis the rep. It would be unfair to criticize Avis because I was travelling with 2 experienced holiday reps (one had repped Mourtemeno herself many years ago) but I have to offer some advise. Please please refrain from giving minute details of the new road during the transfer. I am sure it will be as wonderful as you suggest but seeing as we were travelling on the old one (and most of your guests probably will for the next year or two) it is a bit of a kick in the teeth to hear about what we are missing. Overall she seemed polite and helpful to the guests who needed her advise.

To the hotel. I cannot believe some of the negative comments on here. Lets get some perspective. It is one of the cheapest hotels I have ever seen in Greece and is a million miles from being one of the worst. The pool is perfect for the size of hotel and is extremely child friendly. I have a 5 year old swimmer and 3 year old non-swimmer who both adored it. I counted 13 children (plus some adults) on one particular day who all had a great time.
The terrace is lovely if you want shade and the bar area is large and clean. In fact the hotel is clean, period. The staff are really nice (friendliness works both ways) and Christos is as described below.
The room (1bed apartment), clearly needed some updating (as does the hotel), but was clean and perfect for a family of 4. The room was cleaned and bins emptied on a daily basis. In fact it is laid out in such a way that it could almost have been classed as a 2 bed apartment. We loved the 2 balconies that meant we did not disturb the kids in the evening.
This is a clean and intimate hotel that makes you feel that you really are in Greece. Be prepared to makes lots of new friends (something that we usually tend not to do) but enjoyed because of the surroundings.
During our 2 week stay I do not recall any of the guests moaning and many said they were happy to return next year.
If you want a beautiful setting with great beaches, superb food and a real Greek feel, all on a very healthy budget then grab a slice of the Moutemeno.
For all the moaners, I don't think you are going to be happy anywhere so why not save a bit of money and stay at home.

Room Tip: Grab a room at the back. It can be very hot in the morning but cooler by the evening. You just might...

Recently returned from a superb holiday in Syvota staying at the Mourtemeno Hotel. As many other reviewers have commented, a budget hotel with adequate facilities. the staff were superb especially 'Christos' who undertakes the night shift and does juts about everything from tending bar, micro-waving pizzas, sorting out minor problems. A really nice young man.
Notes:
Use plenty of insect repellant both in the hotel and outdoors.
The air conditioning is paid locally at a rate of 10 euros per night. It is essential if you want a good nights sleep as the temperatures can be very high in the summer just remember to budget in the cost as it is quite a hit when you first arrive.
Kitchen area is small with two electric rings. The back one heats the pan quickest as there is no kettle for that necessary cuppa. Would advise taking your own preference in tea bags/coffee though the local supermarkets are only a 5 minute stroll away. Carrying a 6 litre pack of water back to the hotel can be very tiring.
Breakfast is available at 5 euros each and is quite a simple affair. Much better to buy the local fruit, yoghurt and honey and you can have a healthy breakfast at less than half the price.
We visited 8 tavernas during our stay and did not have a bad meal at any of them. However we did favour two in particular. Just down the road in to town, on the right, is one called Mantzabella. Good 'rustic' food with great staff. Very traditionally Greek. If you learn a few simple phrases they really appreciate your effort.
Our favourite was the OSTRIA. If you walk along the harbour front to the right the entrance is set back between 2 sea front establishments. Do not be put off. The food is excellent and the setting is fine. Again, a couple of simple phrases goes down well. We went several times and they even prepared 'special' meals just for us. The local wine is eminently quoffable but do try the ZITSA. A really nice white wine from the Zagoria area. 14 euros a bottle but very nice. Their tsatsiki and dolmades are amongst the best.
Our favourite beach was just around the corner, Zavia. Smaller than the others with fewer sun beds, a bit gravelly but with good shade for the fairer skinned and boat hire for the more adventurous. Smashing little taverna/coffee bar Zavias Beach.Great staff. Again, a couple of simple phrases helped. Food was simple and a somewhat limited menu but more than adequate for a good lunch. Their chicken fillet and 'bifteki' were really good. Occasional wasps in evidence.
We hired a car for 5 days (through the Olympic rep) but there is also a very good agency 5 minutes down the road on the left called ISABELLA. Wonderful staff, Georgia is multi lingual and very helpful. I keep going on about having simple phrases. Whilst in Isabellas we bought a phrase book 'Quick Greek' for 6 euros. Wish I had bought it years ago. Strongly recommended.
Syvota is a beautiful little village but we wanted to see other sights. There is an excellent new motorway that runs from Igoumenitsa up to Thessaloniki. Two or three toll booths (depends how far you go) but only 2 euros each toll.
We travelled as far as Vergina to visit the tomb of Philip of Macedon (footsteps of Alexander the Great) and even managed a visit to Meteora on the way back. Breathtaking.
We also had a full day in the Zagoria region.Recommend going to the monastery at Monodendri for spectacular views over the Vikos Gorge. The pack horse bridges are also a wonderful sight. Buy a good map as road signage is not quite what we are used to.
I won't bore you with any more trip information except to say that there are more wondrous things to see in the locality around Parga.
Syvota is a great place to relax and unwind, well placed to visit wonderful sights and antiquities and the Mourtemeno is a good value hotel as your base.

Room Tip: The rooms we were in overlooked the pool and had originally been two/family room. Lots of space with...

Just got back after a week at the mourteno and am sorry to have had to leave. The location is perfect and the staff were lovely! The rooms and bar area are basic but this is after all what you expect from a low budget hotel in greece! Its a short stroll to the harbour and an even shorter stroll to the beach. As two young friends wanting a restful but fun holiday we were not disappointed! I cant praise the lovely Christos enough for how kind and helpful he was during our stay, he was great with everyone young or old and was awfully kind with his measures :)

Overall I would say if you are looking for a relaxing holiday with a friendly greek atmosphere this is a great place to stay! Just remember the mosquito repellent and a few extra euros for your air con and enjoy your stay.

Just back in UK after spending a week here, and have to say that we had an absolutely brilliant time. Have read other reviews which sum up the hotel perfectly, basic but perfectly adequate, it is after all a bargain to stay here! Staff helpful and friendly, especially the lovely Christo (vIncent). Some complaints were made about noise at the bar during early hours of the morning, so you may want to ask tor a room facing away from pool if this is a problem. Don't get me wrong, there is no blaring music here, just general chatter from the guests (myself and 2 friends included) having a great time and unwiling it to end.

Would definitely recommend this hotel!

we had a room at the back, facing the mountains.. it was a lovely apartment with two balconies plenty of space. The kitchen with everything you would need to cook lots of pots and pans glasses etc.
We got our breakfast round the corner was a very good bakery selling yummy cakes parteries pies next door to the bakery was a icecream parlour that sold coffee. We brought our own coffee and tea and the hotel will lend you a kettle. Across the road from the bakery is a good little supermarket.. We found everything cheaper than other Greek holidays maybe this is because the resort is mostly Greeks and Italians on holiday.
We walked to the nearby beaches the nearest called Zavia is small but not to busy we always had a choice of sunbeds (5 euros for 2 beds) nice little taverner behind in the shady trees which did lovely food and a snack bar that did beer and little bottles of wine etc. All very sophisticated and relaxed. The sea was beautiful and cool in the 44 degree heat.
The next beach Mega Ammos we walked to sometimes which is after Zavia beach which had a lovely taverner on the left side nice chillout music and table service at our sunbed, little beach shops we are not sure why everyone was down the other end of the beach all together as the food and friendliness down our end was great.
The town of Sivota is a joy the be lovely bars and restaurants we ate at all of them all very affordable the bars also you get to see a wonderful sunset every evening Large beer and a glass of wine came to 5 euros.
Would stay again only thing we refused to get the aircon at 10 euros a day as we thought this was to much. We thought the pool small for us, but I am sure it was fine if you could not be bothered to walk about to other beaches
All in all a great romantic relaxing holiday.

Just returned 26thJuly after a weeks self catering holiday at the Mourtemeno
TRANSFER - An hour and a half transfer on coastal roads mostly, so great views with narrative from your rep Avis, a real character who seems to know a bit about everything ....
Upon arrival we were a bit suprised to be dropped off at the bottom of a lane at least 200 yds from Hotel, which isnt a problem as such, as long as you have wheels on your suitcase ?. then check in which was a bit awkward as little english spoken by staff
BEDROOMS - we found our 3rd floor self catering apartment / family room had been allocated in advance and very basic - camp/foldaway beds for the kids in one room, and two single beds for the wife and I in the other.
KITCHEN A very basic kitchenette area with 2 hotplates, a sink and fridge, plus cutlery, two pans/frying pan and thats your lot !! If you expect to make toast and tea of a morning, they will hire you a toaster and a kettle for the week at some shameful price I wouldnt entertain so can`t remember ! it was something ridiculous like 10euros for a kettle and 20euros for toaster for the week. Perhaps you like I , can see a pattern developing here ?? for example: If you expect to sleep at night in the Greek summer heat - its between 80 an 90 degrees, then like us you will be asked to pay an extra 10euros a night air CON charge for a family room and 7euros for a studio apartment.
Hotel theme = carved to the bone price to travel company making it an attractive proposition to us the punter .... then you arrive and they (for basic self catering items) proceed to attempt to take down your pants ! may I suggest a travel kettle and use the lovely bakery - turn right out the gate, right end of lane, follow road around to left 100yds on right, fresh baked croissant 25cents each mmm :-).
Facing the Bakery is a well stocked supermarket open till late with prices roughly the same as at home.

BATHROOM - basic , with hand held shower ?? no bracket on wall to hold it for you, so that was fun, and makes for a wetroom situation as the shower curtains are 3 inches too short and don`t stay inside the base.
SWIMMING POOL - small but we found adequate for hotel size , sunbeds/umbrellas plentiful, but only one plastic chair for the whole pool !
POOL BAR - 3euros for a bottle Mythos beer ! ( Supermarket price 97cents ) Oh yes and whatever you do don`t buy a cold beer at the supermarket and expect to drink it by the pool this is VERBOTEN !! and you will be lined up against a wall and etc !!
I don`t want to sound like too much of a drama queen but this was the way we felt whilst there - you are warned not to consume anything bought outside the hotel by the pool ( on your self catering holiday ) because of the Greek taxman !! How condescending is that ?
Rant over, lol ;-o in a nutshell good holiday basic hotel but beware hidden extras and overbearing matron-like holiday reps. If you have kids try the Amusement Arcade 500yds down high street on left for cheap drinks and snacks 8pm onwards.

Room Tip: Only rooms on the top floor have Mosquito screens and these are a must because you will be bitten,

Stayed here on my own for a couple of weeks on B+B in July. The hotel was very basic but clean and although there wasn't a massive choice for breakfast there was sufficient. Remember you get what you pay for.
I am disabled and the family couldn't do enough to help me.
The rep Avis is very knowledgable and couldn't have been more helpful.

If you are on your own beware of the sunbeds at Zavia beach, they will not halve the price so you have to pay for 2 and the brolly, that was until Avis and Isabella tours took up the battle on my behalf. They chose the wrong one to rip off. I did get a card after a couple of days telling me to show it and I would only have to pay for one bed. This worked for me but they were persisting in charging the full wack to other single people. Never before anywhere have I had to pay for 2 beds. Advice is to make a fuss and then tell Avis who will act for you.

Sivota is a lovely place and pretty quiet, although I didn't go into the town very often. There was no need to walk very far for a meal, as you come out of the lane from the hotel turn right towards the town and on the first bend there is a taverna facing you. The food is lovely here and the prices are reasonable and often cheaper than in the main area plus they will veer from the menu if you ask.
