“Relaxation and on a budget!”
Reviewed September 2, 2006

We have just stayed for 14 nights at the Koutrakis 2A and 2C and had a lovely stay. Be warned if travelling in Jul/Aug the only air conditioning is in the main bedroom and the additional bedded area get very hot. The apartments are clean and spacious but the kitchenette area is not really suitable to prepare a dinner as only 2 electric rings. The pool area is clean and pool is ok but the surrounding area will accommodate approx 50 sunbeds (which you need to get to quick to get in the morning!!) there are 26 apartents catering to 2-5 people - you can do the maths! We would recommend Aura in the bay area for eating. Family run and owned very high standard of service good selection of snacks and food and it is immaculate! The fruit salad is fresh and plentiful. The situation of Aura/Mamma Mia and Pluori all makes the eating around the harbour a very relaxing experience (waves lapping on the shore as you sit and sip a cocktail!) The BBQ night at the Koutrakis is fun and food is plentiful. The excursions wiht Olympic are average. Spinalonga is worth a visit and so is the Cretan night however the food is basic and you only get two drinks for the children allocated for the whole night! The family are accommodating and Dimmitri makes a point of personally saying goodbye to his guests. Rachael is in the bar at the moment who is English and a great help thanks for sorting out the alarm clock Rachael when we had an early excursion. The nearest beach is basic and it is worth the extra walk to Boufos. All in all a good holiday which is can be done on a budget. This is a quieter area and there are no nightclubs in the town. Ideal for families with young children.

We spent two weeks at the Koutrakis in Sissy this August (06).

One website we read said not to be disappointed when you first enter Sissy ( pretty barren, dis-used banana plantation sites) but that there was a treat in store.. quite right too.

Our apartments were family run ( mum, dad and two daughters). Right on the sea front, but not really accessible ( very rocky) - ok if you want to go snorkelling. Apartment was basic ( bathroom could do with an update) and roomy, ( air con available for 7 euros per day). Cute bar, good food if you didnt want to venture into town (10 mins walk max). We were visited 2/3 times during our stay by the maids service.

The family do everything they can to make you comfortable, even do a little greek dancing at the BBQ - great to meet your fellow guests - do a quiz too once a week. We dont like going to a "hi-di-hi" type place -organised hell - but this isnt like it - the place is pretty small so youve sort of stumbled into a family get together. You can take it or leave it - the families we met were a little of both the mix was great and having a 12 year old it was just right ( not too naff, and the pool table in the reception was cool!).

Koutrakis have a reasonable pool - although the area surrounding it is fairly small so on a busy day it can feel a little small, having said that despite the apartments being fully booked we were able to get a sun bed and brolly when we wanted.

Sissy itself has everything you need supermarkets, pharmacy etc and the harbour front is lined with resteraunts. All much of a muchness but all good - especially Mama Mia's the italian - thats excellent. Hemmingways, a tiny cocktail bar was great ( take your pre/ teens for Safe sex on the Beach!). The Pink Flamingo isnt on the front so no view but excellent Kleftiko ( best I had).

Dont bother with the Greek Night at Anapolis, at £90 for the three of us it was a bit of a disappointment - too much pleasing the tourists and not enought greek! We hired a car through Eurodrive in Malia before we left (Malia cars) and practically got 2 weeks for 1. Go into the mountains - fab. We also drove to Knossos - glad we went but as the ruins are literally ruins ( or reconstructions of how they think it looked...) its not as illuminating or interesting for kids as perhaps othere places. We went to the Lassithu Plateau - only an hour from Sissy ( nice to be in the aircon car) and a real peep at rural Crete - definitely worth a look.

We went to a few beaches - we liked Sissy beach best - make sure you buy swim shoes - good snorkelling and taverna. For the best child friendly beach go to the archaelogical beach at Malia it is beautiful sloping sand and crystal sea. You can swim off the harbour too. Lovely to watch the locals go for a late dip bobbing up and down up to their necks in their sun hats!

Biggest curse of the holidays - enormous quad bikes hired out to tourists - not many in Sissy but millions in Malia so be aware if you hire a car - theyre allowed on the main roads. Best bit - absolutely breathtaking sunsets outside your apartments - go see for yourself!

Sissy wont be the same in a few years time - go now if you can - already an all inclusive hotel has been built, close to the Koutrakis(cant speak for the interior or the service but it looks awful - very cramped and soul- less) and its impacting on the tavernas.

We'd go back - despite the farce that is Heraklion airport (theyve got one device for xraying luggage) it took 2 hours to get from the coach into departures (150 yds)!.

We stayed at the Koutrakis Villas in Sissi at the beginning of June 2006.The accommodation was clean, bright and very spacious. The kitchen included everything you would need if you wanted to cook, but why would you - you're on holiday!!The swimming pool whilst not very big is a good size with stunning views overlooking the sea and sunbeds, umbrellas, tables and chairs available free of charge. The atmosphere at the pool bar in the evenings was excellent and great fun, with the owners Dimitris and Litsa making you feel very welcome and very much at home. The entertainment was covered with a Greek Night and BBQ and a Quiz Night. The main meal was absolutely delicious and followed by two traditional greek deserts or fresh fruit. The greek dancing was good fun and certainly gave you enough exercise to accommodate all the food eaten!! This was followed later in the evening by karaoke. The multiple choice questions at the Quiz Night made the evening very enjoyable and not too taxing - just what was needed at the end of the day.All in all our holiday was a completely success. Sissi is a beautiful place and Koutrakis Villas is a wonderful place to stay. The owners are very welcoming and hospitable, and the bar staff are very helpful and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble.I would highly recommend both the resort and the accommodation and will definitely be booking to go back again later this year!
