“Negatives ?”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

I have been trying to think of a negative and for the life of me I can't, this was without a doubt one of the nicest, best kept and friendly hotels I have ever stayed at in this price bracket, the staff were unremitting in their attention to detail and service, the rooms were spacious and very comfortable and the food was pretty damn good too.
I would reccomend this hotel to anyone looking within this price bracket and deny anyone could find better, the location is good and although the beach isn't golden sand !! please this whole area was a volcano what do you expect although there are some very good sandy beaches near by, I would definately stay here again and can only congratulate the management on the exemplary way they run their hotel. WELL DONE. Oh if you do go there try Neromilos restaurant on the way out of town great family owned restaurant with fantastic food at a far to cheap price.

Room Tip: I beleive all the rooms are of equal standard so really can't make any suggestions unless you bo...

We spent the most wonderful week here in mid-September.
Before we booked this holiday we did a lot of research and this included trip advisor. We both respect the right to everyone’s opinion and this review therefore represents our own impressions of the hotel.
We were not disappointed at all with our choice either in terms of the hotel or resort. Sissi is a lovely village to visit with many choices of restaurant and taverna etc and nothing like the tackier resorts we passed through to get here from the airport. The hotel is nothing short of amazing. The first impressions were fabulous and our room facing the mountains was lovely and quiet, spotlessly clean with all furniture in excellent condition. This was a special holiday for us and we received a lovely welcome at reception and a welcome gift of salad, fresh fruit and a bottle of bubbly. Our room was cleaned every day to a high standard with freah bedding and towels.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and cannot emphasise this enough. Breakfast changed every day to a consistently high standard and staff were so welcoming and friendly at all times. We spent most days at the pool which was peaceful with background music from the bar, and enough sunbeds and space for everyone. Bliss!
Whilst we ate one night in the hotel – excellent quality of food – we ate out all other nights really just to experience the resort and can thoroughly recommend Neromilos where we visited on 3 evenings. After dinner we generally returned to the hotel bar as the ambience was very relaxed and just what we wanted. We enjoyed chatting to the guys behind the bar who were great and the cocktails were fab. The cost of drinks was also not exorbitant hence we essentially decided to socialise there in the evenings given the hotel was so nice. The church bells were lovely to hear and the church inside was lovely.
All in all we can thoroughly recommend this hotel without hesitation. We wanted a relaxing break in a good quality hotel with pleasant surroundings. We got exactly that. Whilst we know other people have made some negative comments – each to their own – we can report nothing negative with this hotel. We were very sad to leave and hope to return next year.
We would like to thank Rodica and her team for a wonderful holiday and commend them on the hotel and high standard of service that they provide.

Have just returned from a week away at this lovely modern hotel. From the moment we arrived we felt at home. All the staff were most welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Our room 105 was fantastic - lovely balcony overlooking the gardens, pool and mountains, and we had sun until mid afternoon! The rooms were well sound proofed and we never heard our neighbours. Rooms are spacious, clean and beds are really comfy with linen and towels changed daily. Having a fridge in the room is a real advantage and great to have tea and coffee making facilities too.
The air con is very efficient and extremely quiet.
The breakfasts are delicious with a good choice - all that Greek yogurt is to die for! Coffee was good and plenty of it!
Each day whilst relaxing by the pool we were brought a platter of fresh fruit - a lovely touch we thought.
We were also asked to join a trip ( provided free by the hotel ) to take in some sights - a local monastery, plateau, folklore house and caves. This was excellent and our guide was extremely nice. A good day out!
I would happily recommend this hotel and look forward to returning.
Our thanks to all the staff !

This was a very nice, clean and comfortable hotel. Was very happy with everything from the beds to the showers, breakfasts to the service. Would deffinatly return to this one. The location is walking distance to everything. The church bells on a sunday might wake you up but its only for 30 minutes and you can sleep by the pool/beach in the afternoon.

I'm not sure if RainbowCandy was staying at a different hotel, but my experience is much more akin to that of other reviewers. It depends how you rate your hotels, and I would agree that this is not 5-star, but it is a very good 4-star holiday hotel. The hotel's web site is reasonably accurate, if a little florid, and the only major error I could find was that it isn't 10m from the sea. It's more like 100m, and you can't actually get there because of the buildings on the other side of the road, between the Castello Boutique and and rocky shoreline. One of these is the Castello Village hotel (same company - older and less luxurious), and you may be able to get to the coast path through its grounds.
The hotel is quite new, built since Google Earth last flew over in 2007. The rooms are a good size for two plus child, with aircon, a private balcony big enough for a table and chairs (some also have private plunge pools), TV, fridge, safe, and a bathroom with a Jacuzzi bath. The bath fills from a bath / shower mixer tap but, oddly, there was no bracket with which to fix the shower head to the wall, hence having a shower was a bit of a juggling act. They must keep getting complaints about this, and sooner or later they'll decide to sort out the problem.
The rooms are simply furnished, like many other Meditteranean hotels, but we found it had everything we needed.
The maid changed the sheets and towels every day.
There is a downstairs and indoors sitting area, but really you'd want to spend your time in the open air bar area, or on a sunbed around the pool or on the lawn. The bar is open all day, and serves food if you are around in the middle of the day.
The hotel offers free Wifi, but it only works in the public areas.
We stayed half board, and both breakfast and dinner were buffet-style, with a served-at-table main course. The food was good, but became a little repetitive after a few days. I think they try to lay on too many choices at the buffets, and I'd willingly sacrifice some of these for more upmarket main courses (local grilled fish would be really nice).
They have a good wine list, if a little pricy, and I can recommend the white Santorini at around 21 Euros. A half litre of draught beer is 4 Euros, and a litre of water 2 Euros 50.
There is a minimarket next door to the hotel.
There is also a new church next door, and on Sunday morning it summons the faithful with bells at 0700 and 0830. They don't ring for long, but be warned!
The Castello Boutique is about 500m from the village centre, which is small at generally picturesque, and very different from the tacky resorts of Malia and Hersonissou down the coast. Its best feature is its small harbour, around which are a lot of bars and (mostly fish) restaurants. It wasn't busy when we were there in early October, and the temperture was still quite warm (mid-20s) and the sun hot.
Without a car or the funds to pay for taxis, your options for getting out of Sissi are a bit limited. There is one bus each day at 0900 to Heraklion, and this connects just outside the village with another bus going to Agios Nikolias. The journey to Heraklion takes about an hour and a quarter, via Malia, Hersonissou, and the airport, and costs 4 Euros 50 each way. To Ag Nik it is about half an hour, and costs 3 Euros 10. The buses leave Heraklion at 1500, and Ag Nik at 1530, for the return trip.
There is plenty to do in Heraklion, but you have to spread out the activities in Ag Nik to occupy six hours.
There are innumerable car hire places in Sissi, much cheaper than the international companies, but I don't know whether you'd end up getting ripped off. We were there for a week, and wanted relaxation, so a day each in Heraklion and Ag Nik, a walk to the Malia Minoan Palace, and another walk to Milatos (the next village) gave us enough to do.
When planning your trip to Crete, think about the transfer time from airport to hotel. It took around 40 minutes to Sissi, but there were others on the coach going to Elouda which the rep said would take nearly two hours. Not much fun, when you've arrived at two o'clock in the morning. The same glum faces were on the coach that picked us up for our return.
We came across the Castello Boutique via a Voyage Prive email. This said that the holiday was actually arranged by Olympic Holidays so we looked on their web site and found the identical holiday cheaper by £100 each. Having had the week's holiday, I'm very pleased with it and think the £469 each was a bit of a bargain.

Room Tip: Rooms near the church will give you a rude awakening on Sunday morning. Rooms overlooking the road w...

My husband and I stayed here for a week in September. How I wished we had stayed for two! It was a really lovely hotel and the staff were very friendly and efficient. We tried to upgrade when we arrived but the hotel was full. As it turned out we were delighted with our room (212). It was spacious and well equipped. We slept like babies. The hotel was quiet with the added bonus of tea and coffee making facilities (wine, fruit and water were provided on arrival which was a lovely touch). The village is gorgeous. Plenty of tavernas and the harbour is a delight, especially at night with all the lovely lights. There are a few shops and supermarkets so you can stock up the fridge in your room with beer, soft drinks etc. The journey to and from the village was a bit long-winded via the tour operators coach but at least you could see some other parts of the island. We had the most amazing and relaxing holiday and I thank the hard-working staff for all their efforts. We will be back.

Room Tip: We had a room (212) overlooking the pool, which was lovely
