As a couple we love returning to Sissi and Marigianna Apts. Manos and Billy are very hard working people and make you really welcome. The apartments this year are beautiful after their refurbishment what a lovely surprise.

My partner and I found the MariGianna by chance on the recommendation of some other holiday makers and locals on our second day, after the accommodation we'd originally booked turned out to be so horrible that we didn't want to stay another night. I'm so glad we moved to the MariGianna, as it turned what could have been the holiday from hell into a great week.

Please now disregard the previous reviews about shabby basic rooms, as the whole place was refurbished over the winter and the new decor is excellent - neutral colours, new bed linen and curtains, and re-tiled bathrooms with plain modern tiles. The only issue with the bathroom was that since it's the Greek wetroom style (ie no shower curtain), it could have done with a squeegee to get rid of the water on the floor rather than the plastic broom provided, and/or a bathmat for outside the door so you don't slip - just be careful! We didn't really eat in, but there seemed to be enough equipment to self cater ok.

The pool area is lovely with a soft springy lawn and swim up bar. Yes other people turn up to use the pool but that's because it has the reptuation locally of being the best pool in Sissi. It was early season and the weather wasn't the best during our stay so there was plenty of room and loungers, but I can't comment on how packed it might get later in the season.

I agree with the previous reviewer's opinion about the barbeque that it isn't necessarily the best value at 15e per head if you only get one plateful, but there was plenty of food available and it was all nice and well cooked. As for bar prices, it compared to other pubs/bars in Sissi at 3e for a large beer.

Restaurant recommendations - Anatoli's and Mike's. Best bars - Peggy's Irish Bar, Sissi Arms and Cactus, and the best place to sit and watch the sunset is at Tina's mini golf place by the harbour.

We found Manos and Billy friendly and helpful at all times, and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again or recommend it to others.

Like you are probably doing right now I read the reviews for this hotel before we went and was slightly worried by those that said 'there's a scam at play so don't expect to actually stay here' - However, there are also a lot of very positive reviews so I thought we'll the bad ones must be a few scorned people, the photos look lovely (especially the swim up bar!) and I booked for a week.
You can imagine the sinking feeling i had then when we finally arrived around 3am from our long coach trip from the airport to meet Vasilis (who calls himself Billy) who told us we didn't actually have a room at the apartments but they would drive us round to somewhere else where we could stay.....i was so annoyed at myself for just thinking 'oh, we'll be ok' and falling for the scam!
The place they took us to was truly awful. A tiny room, with a sink unit in the corner supposedly being a 'kitchen', filthy bathroom, half a farm outside the window and groups of noisy people arriving back in the corridoors in the middle of the night - not a quiet family place at all. The following day, after a sleepless night we prepared to meet Vasilis who had promised to call in in the morning to let us know if we could move. Sure enough after no sign of him by gone 2 i had had enough. It felt very sneaky as it's not something I would usually do, but we were furious so called the UK travel agents. I think we fell upon some good luck as we got in touch with a very helpful girl in the UK who fought our cause, because later on in the day at around 5pm, just as we were starting to think we'd have to make the most of a terrible experience, Vasilis turned up (in his white underpants no less!). He was still trying to argue that they didn't have anywhere for us at the Marigianna but i stood my ground and argued (quite vocally) that in this case we insisted on compensation in the form of free meals and air-conditioning where they had put us. Then he strangely managed to find a vacant apartment!

Once we finally made it there the ground floor apartment we were given at the Marigianna was nice. Clean enough - we did see one cockroach but this does happen in such a busy holiday resort in the heat. Manos was constantly cleaning and very tough with his maids (a restaurant owner in the village told us he'd had 3 wives because none were clean enough!) The shower and facilities were all good. Manos introduced himself and apologised for the earlier problems and Vasilis (Billy) was certainly quite friendly from then on, but unfortunately we felt that we couldn't properly trust him.
The pool is nice but does get very busy so don't expect to always get a sunbed. Lots of non-residents come to use the pool during the day and there are, as you might expect, many children so it can be quite rowdy too. If you have children though there's plenty to keep them entertained and it's quite safe.
I wouldn't bother with the barbeque especially in busier seasons. It's not worth 30 euros, you'll end up spending a fortune in the bar and there are lots of non-residents who stay in Sissi year after year and come over for the barbeque, who are somehow going back for their third portion whilst you're still fighting for your first! It's on the same night as lots of other weekly entertainment in the town so do yourself a favour, save your money for a meal in town and drinks in one of the bars instead - you'll have a better night!

Sissi itself is pretty and very close - easily within walking distance from the Marigianna. It's no Malia but it is quite a touristy little place. There isn't any real beach to speak of. There's a rocky strip facing the choppy sea and there's a tiny sandy strip facing the sheltered harbour, where you can swim, but as this is where the boats come in and out during the day it's not the cleanest looking water. There are lots of places to eat or go for a cocktail - to be honest they're all pretty similar, we found most quite expensive and don't expect anything too authentic. One restaurant - Mike's place was good and the closest to proper greek family food that we found. There's also a pizzeria on the road to the big hotel (it's on the right hand side, with painted images of Crete on the walls and a proper stone pizza oven) which is very nice, good value and we wish we'd been able to go back to.

All in all I wouldn't really recommend the Marigianna, unless you have a long holiday booked and are up for the challenge of fighting to actually stay there. Unfortunately, although we tried not to let it, the problems we had at the start did really mar our holiday and we never fully relaxed and enjoyed the break we look forward to so much all year. In the ratings we've given we have taken into account the conditions at the other hotel that we very nearly had to stay at and where you may end up staying if you book at the Marigianna!

Room Tip: Stand your ground don't settle for less!

Me and my partner stayed here last year. Manos & Billy made us feel very welcome.
It is a small & peaceful place with a lovely size pool and swim up bar. The gardens were spacious and plenty of sun beds.

The rooms were fairly basic with limited kitchen utensils so would struggle to self cater!!

Sissi is a lovely little place to visit and for a relaxing holiday, stay at MariGianna apts.

We went to the hotel based on the reviews in trip advisor but found that the hotel did not live up the the hype of the reviews. The hotel was functional and in a reasonable state of repair, the location was fairly central in Sissi and was in relatively clean. However the discovery of 2 large cockroaches (one dead and one alive) in the room was not reassuring and the bins were not regularly changed (an issue in a country were toilet paper is not flushed down the toilet). We were self-catering (which also means supply your own toilet roll) but the slightest presence of food would bring out lots of ants (even into our suitcases). Bedding was clean but with some holes in it. Manos the owner would help when requested but was not forthcoming with advice or assistance on how best to enjoy Sissi or the surrounding area Definitely 2 star accommodation- but it was cheap.

We were disappointed with the room on arrival. The bathroom was beyond basic. There was a shower with no cubicle so water went everywhere. They had left a bucket and plastic chair in the shower with a dustpan to prop the door open and the tiles were filthy. The kitchenette too was very basic - dirty old fridge, 2 ring hob and that's it.

The apartment was cleaned daily but the towels and sheets weren't changed once in a week which was disgusting!

Manos and Billy were really friendly but as with most customer service it was all with a price. After having stayed there for a week we were told that we would have to pay 30 Euros to keep the bags in the room for the afternoon as we weren't leaving until 9pm - This was all advertised like it was a favour until we asked the question of price - I don't think that they would have told us until we returned later. They reluctantly let us put our bags behind reception in the end.

We were invited to a BBQ on our first night there. When we explained that we were vegetarian we were promised pasta and grilled peppers etc which sounded lovely. We didn't realise that you had to pay for the BBQ until we turned up and they hadn't provided anything extra for us so we ended up forking out 30 euros for a plate of chips, bread and coleslaw each - not exactly value for money! We were then kept up by the bar's loud music until 2am! There's no sound insulation in the rooms whatsoever and they all face the bar so you can only sleep once everyone else has decided to call it a night!

Sissi itself was lovely - there was some great places to go for a drink or snack (bar breeze, the mini golf, hemingways, captain jacks highly recommended) and the indonesian restaurant is a must!

Avoid the Knossos supermarket at all costs!!! We bought a cheap watch there and when we went in 2 minutes later to return/exchange it as it didn't work we were met with aggression which was then followed by the large checkout man following me (25 year old girl) out of the shop and trying to hit me and my boyfriend!

I would return to Sissi again or the surrounding area but would definately look to one of the more upmarket resorts rather than return to the Marigianna!

Manos (the owner) and his son Billy were really friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. Manos works all the time to keep the place nice and his guests happy. The rooms were basic but comfortable and cleaned daily (the rooms are being re-furbished this winter). There are plenty of sunbeds and plenty of space to choose where to put them. The village is only a couple of hundred metres away and there are loads of really good restaurants there (plus a couple very close to the hotel). There are 2 well-stocked supermarkets close by and the nearest beach is also close, but a bit small. Definitely would go there again.
