“The Magnolia was excellent!”
Reviewed May 11, 2008

Our stay at the Magnolia in Omaha was mid May 2008 for a graduation ceremony at the Qwest Center, which is 5 minutes away. Here is our experience at the lovely Magnolia:

Location: Easy to find in downtown area & even though we arrived at 4:30 on a Friday, traffic was minimal compared to what we are accustomed to. During our stay, we had several events in other parts of Omaha and were easily able to navigate our way in and out of downtown no problem.

For a diversion, about 3 blocks away there is the Old Market, a cobblestone area with a variety of upscale shops and restaurants. We enjoyed the shops and although we were not there during meal time, we wish we had been! All the restaurants had very tasty-sounding dishes.

Small supermarket – Patrick’s Market, about 1 ½ blocks away from the Magnolia, has lots of fresh produce & a few specialty items in addition to standard supermarket fare.

Room – The room looks just like the one on the website, which is often not the case. Our standard room on the 2nd floor has 2 double beds; room was with spacious, nicely appointed & had very comfortable beds. At the foot of each bed is a leather ottoman, which was nice for placing luggage or sitting on for putting on shoes etc…. Room was relatively sound proof w/the exception of someone in the room right above us briefly running, but it was barely noticeable. Our room was right next to the elevators, but we didn’t hear a thing. Both nights of our stay, there was a wedding reception w/music that went on into the night. We could hear the music a little, but were not at all bothered by it. In-room coffee maker w/Starbuck’s coffee. However, there was no refrigerator.

Room Temp – thermostat in the room allowed for setting the desired temp & it worked well as we like the room cool for ideal sleeping. Windows do not open.

Room’s bathroom – good sized w/step-up shower, no tub. Bathroom has nice fixtures & overall attention to detail was paid w/good results.

Bed and Bath Linens – a step above the standard hotel fare. Also, I like that they have signs to tell guests how to alert housekeeping staff when fresh linens are not necessary in the name of saving water, detergent etc… for environmental reasons. We requested no maid service and the staff received the message to not make up the room.

Wi-Fi - $10/day for wireless in the room, but free wi-fi is available in the lobby bar. Our room was on the second floor & by sitting in certain parts of the room, the lobby’s wi-fi was available no problem.

Parking – Valet in a secure lot is $12/day unlimited in and out. Street parking at meters is readily available & free after 5PM and all day on weekends. To save the $12/day & to not have to wait for a valet to fetch the car each time we left, we parked on the street around the corner from the hotel the first night and had no problems. Sat. night parking was a bit tricky b/c of an event at the Orpheum Theatre (a block away), but we walked to the hotel from our parking spot & felt very safe. The car was in fine shape the next morning.

Shuttle – hotel has a shuttle and will take guests within a mile or so of the hotel at no charge. They were very prompt and the service was good; however, we did not have the phone number of the hotel to call when we needed to be picked up nor did the phone book we used at a restaurant. We finally found the number in a visitors’ guide, called & were picked up promptly. A helpful touch would be to hand shuttle users a card w/the hotel’s phone number on it.

Staff – the staff was very friendly, helpful and seemed genuinely happy to be there and to want the guests to have the most pleasant stay possible.

Happy Hour – this runs from 5:30-6:30 nightly and offers one type of complimentary, so-so quality house white & red as well as beer & soft drinks. We were, however, charged for the pop, but this was quickly corrected. A full bar menu is also available at moderate prices. For food, “Mag Bites” are half appetizers (VERY small portions) that range in price from $3 - $7. We tried the crab cakes and the fried cheese, both of which were excellent. Full-size appetizers are also available. The bar is well decorated & the service was good.

Breakfast 7-10AM– a complimentary, hot American breakfast is available in the bar area. Also available is a made-to-order, 3-egg omelet for $7.95. On our first morning, there consisted of waffles, oatmeal & corn beef hash along w/fruit & a variety of muffins, bagels etc…. Juices & coffees abounded. The next morning’s breakfast was oatmeal, French toast and sausage. The only misstep was that the toaster was not fully functional & hadn’t been for some time apparently. As a result, our food got cold waiting for the toaster to decide to work. We were on a tight schedule and did not wait any longer than we already had.

Evenings from 8-10PM – cookies, teas, milk & hot cocoa were available in the bar. My assumption was that the cookies would be fresh baked, but alas they were run-of-the-mill, store-bought, packaged cookies. A bit of a let down considering all the other attention to details paid.

All in all, we had a very good stay at the Magnolia. I enjoyed the upscale feel, the attentive staff & the attention to detail. I would definitely return as well as recommend it to friends and family & should we ever return to Omaha, I will see if the Magnolia is available.

Magnolia Hotel is AWESOME, the staff is friendly and knowledgable about the town. The towels are soft, beds are amazing with down comforters and trendy coverlets. We enjoyed free valet, free drinks during happy hour- (they actually came to us to take our order several times throughout the hour), free ESCALADE transport, free breakfast, free cookie bar, and no kids!!! Would really like to give a shot out to the amazing staff that made us feel so welcome and comfortable.
