We went for happy hour a week ago and it was great so we were excited to go back. The service tonight was okay not great. It might be because they are relatively new. The menu looks tremendous but the food is more like a chain. Super salty or as if it’s preserved. The wait staff didn’t appear engaged. Really noisy too.

I have to admit I had my doubts. A visit to the Pacific Street restaurant in its previous incarnation provided decent food, but an overall experience far short of what one would call a good value. This Saturday evening visit by eight of us ranging in age from 95 to 13 was not only a good value, but also a really fun dining experience. Start with the beverages: the beer prices are low enough to call cheap by today’s standards and there is a long list of standard and craft beers. Then there are the craft cocktails: I chose the Manhattan, which was generous and distinctive. Among the appetizers is the homemade potato chips topped with blue cheese. Not for the delicate stomach, but very delicious and served fresh and hot. Bread slathered with garlic butter was replaced as it was devoured. Three orders were for the prime rib special ($28) which was large enough for some in the party to split. This might have been the only raised eyebrow: not all of the orders were done exactly to specification (rarer than ordered). None was so far off as to cause a re-order. Add to that crab cakes (all crab, not diluted with breading), and a Wagyu burger (as juicy as the diner said he had ever had), and an order of the best onion rings (hot and crisp) that this diner had had in some years, and the food can be declared an all-round value. As for service, knowing we would have a wheel chair with us, the staff called our home before we arrived to be sure where we were to be seated would be to our liking. Then, we were essentially given one experienced waiter/manager to handle our every wish, and a lot more in the way of filling glasses and making sure we understood our options. A recent newspaper review noted that the cost of dining at the 801 Grill was less than an evening at its predecessor. That is true; however, it is still a place to go for higher-price-point dining. Bottom line: all eight of us left with smiles on our faces.

We decided to try 801 Grill after reading a favorable review in the newspaper. It didn’t disappoint. The St. Louis ribs with mac and cheese were excellent. My wife said the same thing about the crab cakes. Our server, Peter, did a great job. Loved the collection of restaurant photos on the walls.

Most Excellent. Been to 801 downtown and Des Moines. The 801 Grill
has same great food and less pricey and stuffy. Had Rock Shrimp as appetizer.
Very good with hint of heat.

Pork Chop Was wonderful. Came with Smashed and Green Beans. Will be back !

Stopped on Sunday afternoon for there happy hour! Ordered the rock shrimp, Brussels sprouts and escargot. The Brussel sprouts were burned. The escargot was dry probably because the chef forgot the butter, when I pointed this out to the waitress she had no comment. Overpriced, Service was good, if you want to be interrupted constantly.
