ABandB is like finding a piece of gold among rocks. This is a family-run place where they let out the large lower apartment and upstairs rooms. The website is honest in that the rooms are very spacious, extraordinarily clean, and truly feels like a home away from home where you can experience Germany from other than a small, cramped hotel room. Staying here was a great change of pace in that we had room to stretch, relax, and recoup from our busy days.
A down-side, but which actually can be an up-side, is that they are located in a very quiet and safe upper-class residential neighborhood and the walk to the local train station is about 5-6 minutes down the street. In other words, they are not in the middle of town. By car, the travel to Heidelberg is about 30 minutes and to Mannheim about 20 minutes. We had to allow for this travel time. The house is at the foot of the Odenwald and has a breath-taking view of the mountains.
My son and I were impressed with amenities, such as the large clothes washer with hot water, dryer, and the bathroom with separate tub and shower. Contrary to most German places, the water is soft, not hard, as they have an ionized filter. Boy, that was REALLY nice! They also have wireless Internet and a huge collection of DVD’s, but no ‘live’ television. That turned out ok as we found that we didn’t miss not watching live TV because of all the DVD’s, computer, and things to do. The family provided the basics for breakfast, such as cereal, milk, juice, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Anything else we just purchased at the local store. With these supplies, we got up when we wanted to get up in the morning and made our own breakfast at our leisure.
The living areas had really nice couches that we enjoyed sprawling out on. I couldn't get over how everything was so clean, polished, and fresh. A lady came in every day to clean our towels and tidy up for us.
They take only cash or Paypal, which was ok with us as we saved the credit card fees.
If you are in the Heidelberg-Mannheim-Weinheim-Viernheim area for at least two days or more, you might want to consider staying here as a great alternative to the hotels.
