“Wonderful afternoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2012

My husband and I stopped at the Parc de Oiseaux with no idea of what to expect. We were very pleasantly surprised. The small train around the lake was a great way to start the visit. Afterwards, we returned to see the areas that we found most interesting. This is a great attraction for families and anyone who enjoys seeing birds in very pleasant surroundings.

“Brilliant for birdwatchers and almost anyone else”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2012

We initially intended to go to the park on the public holiday but when we arrived there was a massive queue , so decided to come back a different, less busy day and buy tickets online

The park itself mainly revolves around a large central lake , with different habitat areas - some which are open air and others with barriers eg penguins or large cages, most of which have sections which allow people to walk through for closer views of the birds.
There is a nursery where you can see some newly hatched chicks and a few eggs that are pipping .

There are also some areas where you can feed the birds [buying the food on site].
There are few animals - eg wallabies but the focus is on the birds.

There are a few areas with shelter from the rain [including snack areas] but the majority of the park is outdoor or minimally sheltered.

We had a few heavy showers and some sunny spells and then a relentless downpour at the end of the afternoon but we weren't bothered by the weather and found enough to do and see and eat to fill 6 hours without feeling bored - even for the not particularly bird oriented.

Most of the paths are flat , so it is reasonable for people with mobility issues, pushchairs etc The central walkway across the lake got quite slippy after the rain [to be expected]

There are some kids play areas and snack areas, a couple of vending machines, some cafeteria type restaurants and a ''proper'' restaurant - Le carpe which requires reservations [ask at entrance and you will be given a reservation ticket with timeslot]

Prices in the snack areas were pretty reasonable for this sort of place - eg 1 euro 60 for a small bottled fizzy water,

The restaurant was a reasonable standard - 24 euros for a 3 course lunch with a variety of choices - frog leg tarte and smoked trout starter, conft de canard, home made strawberry mousse were the specials of the day A half bottle of red wine was 7 euros - I have eaten in better restaurants but it was very good standards for a theme-park or tourist attraction .

The day earlier , we had paid 5 euros for a coke in the super-touristy village Pérouges, so i was pleasantly surprised by the value for money at the parc des oiseaux

There is an outdoor amphitheatre with bird flying shows -places should be reserved at the entrance . You will get a special ticket which is surrendered at the entrance to the amphitheatre - but there is no extra charge for this.

The bird flying show was outstanding. I have never seen anything like it before - very original and a fantastic range of birds. from the owls and birds of prey and parrots that are often found at such shows to the more exotic - marabou storks, pelicans, brightly coloured ibises and vultures.
People scared of swooping birds might be a bit freaked by such giant birds flying a few centimetres overhead -but it was amazing to see the birds flying to close.

Wild birds are also attracted to the park because it is a huge protected space with food etc and a large percentage of the stork population of la Dombes are seen around the park , often nesting on special nesting platforms , or in the surrounding trees or just at random on top of the cages . At the moment they are actively sitting on nests or fetching food for their young. it was a great privilege to see these magnificent birds flying back and forth overhead and to catch glimpses of their chicks [admittedly not the cutest babies in the world]

Additionally the park attracts a huge number of herons - mainly grey herons, and little egrets , but also a few night herons and cattle egrets - especially noticeable at the end of the afternoon , early evening when they started to roost

The park is a brilliant place to visit for birdwatchers but even folk who don't have much interest in birds will still have a great day out - it works well as something for almost everyone.

“Lovely park with lots of interesting birds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2012

Very nice place to visit and to get out in nature some. The birds are fascinating. I'm told they are different at different seasons. Well worth a half a day's trip.
