“Fantastic facility with ski in/ski out and great spa”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

Another great property run by CGH. We stayed at their sister location last year (L'Oree des Neiges) and loved it. This year we thought we'd try this location principally because of it's Spa facilities. There are three buildings, we stayed in Block C which is furthest away from reception. The trade off is you have to carry your bags up the hill to get to it when you arrive - may be frustrating if you have young children, fortunately I've got two "willing" grown up children! But once there you put your skis on at the front door and ski to the Grizzly chair lift - perfect! If you've stayed at a CGH apartment you know what you are getting, modern, well-equipped, clean and tastefully decorated. This is our 6th or 7th visit to one of their facilities. The Spa is excellent and when we went was very quiet. Good Gym, saunas, steam rooms, pool and jacuzzi.

Service was good, you can't always say that in France! We hired skis from the Skiset shop attached to the hotel. I agree with other reviewers that the selection is small but our skis were of good enough quality and the service we got was good.

Peisey Vallandry is a quiet resort, it's attraction is the closeness of the Cable Car which links Les Arcs with La Plagne ski areas. There's a great apres ski bar next to the apartments called Mont Blanc Bar which proved very popular with our party.

Happy skiing!

Room Tip: Block C is closest to the ski lift and is true ski in/ski out, but be prepared to carry your bags up...

We stayed here for a week in one of the apartments which sleeps up to 10 - we were told that this meant 4 bedrooms plus sofa beds for 2. We were a party of 8 and assumed that each couple would therefore have a bedroom with a door, however, the 3rd and 4th bedrooms are upstairs with one being a proper bedroom and the other open plan on the mezzanine. Not ideal. The rest of the apartment was lovely, quite spacious, though quite squashed when we all wanted a comfortable seat rather than a dining chair.

The staff in reception were very welcoming - and although we arrived early we were able to check in after a ten minute wait. The spa facilities are nice and there is a lovely pool.

My biggest complaint (and this has been the case in every French ski resort we've visited) is that no-one clears the pathways around the hotel. L'Oree des Cimes is built on the hillside and during the day you have the option of walking through the hotel and up flights of stairs outside to your apartment. At night, the reception area is closed and you have to walk round the public road, and turning off on the private road to the chalets. These roads were covered in ice when we were there, melting slightly during the day, and re-freezing at night. Two of our party fell during the daytime (one whilst wearing shoe crampons), and we saw other people fall too.

This is however definitely the best place in Peisey-Vallandry and I would go back if we were in the area.

Excellent apartments, good quality interior and fittings, great location just next to the slopes, a short walk down the hill into Vallandry village, and lovely views right across the valley.
We have stayed here twice, once in a small apartment for 6 in 2011, and the second time in a larger apartment for 10 in 2012. The small apartments are quite small, but the larger one was fine, although the seating area was a bit limited. Vallandry is in a really great location which allows you to explore the whole of the Les Arcs ski area, or you can take the Vanoise express across to La Plagne. The main village is OK but not particularly pretty.
On the comments on unhelpful staff, we have not had any problems with the staff at CGH reception.
My main piece of advice is for anyone needing to hire or buy ski equipement: please completely avoid the Skiset shop in the CGH building just 10m from the main entrance to CGH. The selection / range of skis and boots is very poor (so no choice if you pay for the more expensive and supposedly better skis), the quality of the skis at the higher end ("Excellence" and "Sensation") is poor compared to other hire companies, the staff are not very helpful, and when we had a small amount of damage to some hire skis the manager's approach was talk very fast in French and to rip his customer off for as much as he possibly can. This was despite the fact the skis had been well used for the last 2 years by many hirers, and could be easily and cheaply repaired.
Alternative ski hire shops: for anyone with a car, I recommend using the larger of the 2 Intersport shops in Plan Peisey which is only about 500m away - they have an excellent range of skis particularly at the higher end, and have a much better approach to customer service.

We stayed in a well appointed two (one twin and one double semi ensuite) bedroomed apartment with a pleasant living space and balcony. It was 2 minutes walk from the Grizzly chairlift which provides easy access into the Les Arcs part of the huge Paradiski area and to the Vanoise Express cablecar into La Plagne. There is a good size ski and boot locker for each apartment and hotel guests can use the spa with pool, sauna, steam room and gym. The apartment could sleep 6. We were 5 adults so one slept in the living area but there was plenty of room to store kit and bedding out of the way during the day. The lively Mont Blanc bar serving good food is 2 minutes walk away and there are several decent restaurants in the village which is a 5-10 minute walk down the hill.

Room Tip: Ask about a south facing balcony in a block not too far up the hill.

Lovely new hotel. Just unhelpful staff. On our arrival checked in and was told to lug our luggage up 4 flights of stairs or we could go right round the hotel and lug it up the hill (which it what we did) Just felt if we'd had very young children who could not of helped with the bags this would of been very hard going.

You could pre order bread for the morning and pick it up from reception.

Skiing was really fantastic wide open slopes. My husband and I have been skiing for 10 years and our children did their ESF level 3 and in fact my older daughter did that well she gained her bronze level. Their teacher Patrick was the best we'd had. Experienced and the kids loved him which makes so much difference when he made the lessons fun.
We were holidaying with another family who had only skied once before. They had private lessons to build up confidence and will be ready for group ski school next time.

Eating out - La Salon was really good we ate twice there. The bar mont blanc Burgers/texmex staff english and service and food were great. Cooked in the apartment a few times. Well stocked kitchen. Used takeaway pizza service one night to.

Had a very disappointing massage at the spa. So really wouldn't recommend that. Pool was very cold too. But plenty of kids were in anyway!

Had a really wonderful ski holiday. Shame about staff at the hotel it could be totally fabulous.

Room Tip: Stay inside main hotel if you have small children because no assistance is given with luggage to roo...

This is a nicely presented and generally well kitted out hotel. We were a party of 8, four adults & 4 children aged 10 or under, the apartment for 8 we stayed in was just about big enough, however if you have older children, or are all adults, it could get a bit crampt as you have to convert the sitting area to beds. One thing they don't tell you is that the DVD players are only available for two days at a time, a bit of a problem if you have small kids on very snowy days.
The staff were helpful and advised us of the bakery service (which is great) and the necessity of early spa booking, so maybe some feedback is getting through.
We stayed in A block, up lots of stairs so if you are getting transport to this hotel then it is worth asking reception which block you are in before unloading, as you are able to drive round and drop your bags by your block and so avoid carrying them up the 65 + steps. The great bonus of all this height is you can ski in and out.
The village is very friendly and everyone we encountered was helpful, even suggesting savings eg the adjacent ski hire shop will give you a 10% discount if you present a stamped voucher from the hotel.
All in all a great place to stay and we will almost certainly be going back next year.

We stayed recently for the 2nd time - this one was in a 3-bedder for New Years week. The apartment was spotless and very well kitted out. The bedrooms are not overly large but have everything you need - however the lounge and kitchen area was excellent. A couple of small things needed fixing and the maintenance man came quickly and was charming to fix the problem. The underground parking is worthwhile to keep your car free of snow and ice. There are a lot of steps to walk up from the reception to the accommodation but you are bound to have hills if you want to ski! The main building has several open fires and lounging ares which are great but they shut far too early at 8pm every night for some strange reason. The spa is excellent and a real bonus after a hard days skiing. The steam baths are great but the jacuzzi a bit cooler than we would have liked. All in all a great place for a family ski holiday - we will go again.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms overlooking the slopes if you want an interesting view.
