“Best B&B in Provence”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 24, 2010

My husband and I just returned from Provence, where we spent 5 nights at the Mas de Miejour. Fantastic hospitality, charming house & decor, extremely helpful hosts, central yet peaceful location and delicious breakfasts. This place is a great value for Provence! Husband Fred is an American-trained computer scientist who left the tech world to study wine and later to open the B&B with his wife Emma. They advised us each morning on where to go, which market was happening, which wineries to visit and where to go for dinner. Breakfast was different each day - Emma's homemade yogurt, Fred's jams and the best croissants during our trip. We can't recommend it enough!

This was our first stop on a French extravaganza and I have to say we weren't disapointed. Emma and Fred are great hosts who have thought of everything. From a little internet station to meals on an evening - nothing was too much trouble.
I will always remember their beautiful garden and great wine choices. I only wish we had stayed longer. Thanks for having us.

In June, we had the pleasure of staying in a home, the gite, at the Mas de Miejour.
We were very comfortable in our 3 bedroom, living room and (our favorite) the well equiped kitchen that opened into our private garden.
Fred and Emma were super hosts. Aside from anticipating our needs, they were always ready to share information. From their recommandations, we found many great restaurants. They helped us locate the wonderful food markets (even a daily 6:00 P.M. gem) and gave us inside tipson where to purchase the best goat cheese and most delicious pastry. Since we were also interested in wine, Fred and Emma's extensive knowledge of this subject, led us to find great vinyards......naturally resulting in numerous tastings.
The spacious grounds surrounding our gite at the Mas de Miejour, and for our enjoyment, included fruit trees, olive trees, and the typical flowers from Provence. Their lovely swimming pool offered relaxation and privacy.
Our experience at the Mas de Miejour was so enjoyable that we look forward to returning (chez-nous) to our "home" in Provence.

  • Liked — The charm of being in Provence and the ability of Fred and Emma, our hosts, to make us feel at home.

Quite easily the best gite we have stayed in, and we have spent 20 of the last 25 years in self catering holidays all over France.
The hosts, Fred and Emma, also run bed and breakfast and by the comments in the visitors book, this is also of a very high standard.

Although set over three floors, and maybe not suitable for those with mobility issues, this property is clean, well appointed, and simply furnished, (comfortable beds, which isnt always the case, believe me!) There is a private courtyard garden area - I loved the hammock -, and unlimited access to the shared pool. We ate all our meals outside, which is a rare pleasue coming from the UK. It sleeps up to 5, and is child friendly (well, teenager friendly which is probably worse...). And full marks for have a decent array of sharp kitchen knives - also a first!!

Its position close to Avignon is ideal for exploring the region - we went as far as Cassis on the coast which is about an hour and a half away. (get up early and you may find somewhere to park when you get there...)

Always eager to help, Fred and Emma can provide you with all the info you need - from restaurants to try - and avoid - the best sites to see and the best vinyards to visit.

All in all a faultless vacation, in no small part due to the accomodation, and a destination I would gladly receommend to anyone.

We hired the gite that is attached to the bed breakfast and had a lovely time. We found it a bit wierd that they requested you clean the gite before you left and to take your recycleable rubbish with you but we did get on with it and the morning we left thouroughly cleaned the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, lounge and took our rubbish with us...this did seem quite a lot of work considering we had paid hundreds of euros for the privilidge of renting the gite. On returning home we received a very rude and offensive email from the owner requesting we send a £39 cheque for cleaning otherwise he would cash the £135 deposit cheque we had sent that he said he would return to us when we arrived and paid. He did not return it to us but told us he had destroyed it how naive were we! It is a lovely place to stay indeed we were tempted to stay again but if you want a week away without any cleaning this is not the place for you, also ensure you get your deposit cheque back. To see the least it has a left a very bad last impression on us and we will not be returning.

We are sorry of what happened. We have been renting this gesthouse since 1999 and never had a bad review. We probably didn't have the same concept of the word : cleaning!
We never intended to keep the entire security deposit but just take our share, which was finally not so!

What a great place! Emma and Fred are lovely hosts, the lodging is a beautiful century old farmhouse with cream walls and pale blue shutters. The rooms are large, bright, charming with large ensuite bathrooms. Breakfast is served on the Terrace under stately plantan trees and consisted of fresh bread, yogurt, fruit and fantastic coffee.

Emma and Fred are both sommeliers and offer a wine service and olive and cheese plate if you are so inclined. Be sure to ask Fred or Emma about local wines and a local restaurant called the Villa in Isle sur la Sorgue.

There is a lovely pool, hammocks and shaded lounge chairs where you can pass the afternoon away reading or just listening to the mistral wind in the trees. This was definately one of our favourite places in France.

  • Liked — Charm, garden, proximity to historical sites and culture in Provence
  • Disliked — We did not stay long enough
