This train ride was the idea of my girlfriend. She found the website and on further investigation we found out that on weekends - Sat/Sun only - They offer a little 45 minute, fun train ride where they take you through boulder. Make sure to look up what times the trains depart because there are only 4 or 5 rides the whole day.

So we got there in time for a 2:30 train ride. We arrived around 1:30, paid 10 dollars a person for a ticket. We had some time to kill, but luck would have it that the company offers a free 10-15 minute ride to the graveyard, where an employee gives you a tour of old trains and a bit of history of Boulder pertaining to the building of Hoover Dam.

So that was fun. We boarded the train about 15 minutes prior to departure, which was standard and away we went. Its a pretty cool experience as the employees are really knowledgeable about a lot of the different things going on in the Southwest. (Im fron NY and dont know much about Nevada)

So the entire back and forth takes about 45 minutes. It's a cool experiences. Its good for families, we saw tons of people with kids and grandparents. You're able to walk around the train and go to different cabins, although i dont think there was a need to switch cars.

Train's max speed is about 20mph, so its not a thrill, perse. Its more of a pleasant ride along which was enjoyable to even me - 20 something year old who likes thrill rides and speed. Dont expect to be on a bullet train. I think it was a very worthwhile experience and its only 15 minutes, if even that much, from Hoover Dam. We stopped in on our way to Hoover Dam.

We were trying to find some kid friendly activities for my 4 year old grandson on a recent business trip to Vegas. We hit the jackpot with the nevada Southern Railway! It was easy to find, right off the highway. Give yourself enough time to look around the various railroad cars on display. I found the US Mail car very interesting. The train is very clean and run by volunteers. I love it when volunteers are involved because they are there because they truly have an interest, which this group definitely did and it was obvious. You buy your tickets at he ticket booth and wait for them to board the train. The anticipation was half the fun with a 4 year old. Sitting on the benches looking at the train you can't help but feel the nostalgia all around you. They have a small gift shop and lots to look at (full scale) while you wait to depart. Once aboard, the ticket taker narrates the entire trip. You travel just past the Railway Pass Casino. It was very interesting to hear the history of this train and the important role it had with the building of the Hoover Dam. Anyway, the train goes in reverse and returns you to your starting point. You can walk car to car while the train is moving. One car being an open air car. Also, they clean all the windows in the cars between trips. This thing is spotless! All in all, it was a great value. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children but there are also coupons at their website for a buck off...http://www.nevadasouthern.com
