We stopped by on the way from Vegas to the Grand Canyon south rim. An easy 30 minute stop. We did not do the tour. Just looked over the edge. Very impresive. Make sure you drive right over, free parking on the far side. Very nice lookout too before the dam too.

The dam tour was fabulous. We booked a tour where we were picked up from our hotel by shuttle and taken on a tour. The tour guide staff was great, the tour exceptional. The problem I had was that we also were to tour Ethel M Chocolate Factory during this tour. When we got there, the plant was shut down and the only people working was in the gift shop. If we paid for this extra part of the tour, why didn't they schedule it at a time that the plant would be running? Very disappointed in the tour company

Finally, I got a chance to see Hoover Dam after many times visiting Las Vegas. I expected to see flush of water but it was not like that so it was a bit boring to me. Hoover Dam history is very amazing so take the power plant tour, $11 per person plus $7 parking. The memorial bridge is new so take a walk and take some picture.

There is a man made lake, Lake Mead so if you go to Hoover Dam around noon and by the time you return around 4-5pm, it's nice to take some picture of the lake.

This tour is a must. No matter how you get there, take the time to visit and take the tour of the dam. It is very well done with plenty of visuals during the tour and just walking around on your own. If you can just get out there take your time and enjoy all the sights including walking across the new bridge. There are fees for the different levels of tours, but you can just go and walk around too, but do recommend at least the minimal tour at best. Just $11.00.

This is such an easy trip from Las Vegas and provides a nice balance of activities from the strip. You can spend as little or as much time as you'd like. We did the full $30 tour into the bowels of the dam and it was really interesting. I wouldn't say that this tour is a "must do", but you certainly get to see/here more of/about the insides, construction, etc. than if you just take the shorter tour. Since the tours are first come, first serve, plan your day accordingly. We arrived at 11:40am and the next tour availability was 1pm. This worked out great, as we had enough time to walk along the dam and take photos, visit the old exhibit hall (hardly worth it), and watch the video in the visitor center (worth it). After our hour tour, we drove up to the new highway bridge parking lot and walked on the bridge. This is really a must-do! The view of the dam is amazing from here and you really get to see the whole scope of the dam. This is a great attraction for almost all ages. Even if you don't pay for the tours, parking is $7 - we didn't see a way around paying for this and it's actually not a bad thing because the dam doesn't get funds from Congress, so they rely on this money to pay their operating expenses.
