“Chateau La Roque- a wonderful holiday”
Reviewed August 27, 2008

We stayed at Chateau la Roque for one week and had a most relaxing holiday. Our hosts, Chantal and Jean were absolutely charming and nothing was too much trouble. We stayed in the small 'Garden Room' which had magnificent views from its balcony. The room has an ensuite with 2 sinks and a powerful shower, and a separate toilet and bidet. The bed was really comfortable. There are seating areas on many levels in the grounds in small secluded terraces. The pool is carved from the surrounding rocks and is a place to cool off rather than to swim any distances. Breakfast is served on a lower terrace with breathtaking views below. There is a selection of fresh locally produced fruit, delicious yoghurts, crusty bread and coffee/a wide selection of teas/herbal infusions made from plants in the hotel grounds. We dined at the hotel on one evening and the meal was superb. The food was freshly bought and prepared by Jean that day and was delicious. Jean and Chantal are extremely kind people and they were always patient when I tried to speak French to them. Their English is excellent. There are many villages within easy reach and Avignon is a short drive away too. We also visited the lavender fields and a vineyard. Jean and Chantal are always willing to advise on trips out. The prevailing atmosphere at the hotel and in the local area is relaxing. The hotel itself is a tastefully renovated castle which dates back to medieval times. It is fascinating to talk to Chantal and Jean about the way that they have carefully modernised it and still retained its integrity. We would certainly recommend this as a brilliant holiady destination.

What a wonderful place to stay.
We stayed 6 nights early Oct '07 and ate breakfast each morning on the terrace with views of the surrounding valley.
Rooms have been revovated to a very high standard and Jean is an excellent host, as nothing is too much trouble for him. He even made breakast at 6.30 am for our early departure.
A bit difficult place to find but well worth the journey.
we hope to return soon

Chateau la Roque is tucked away, perched in the hills of the Luberon. It must be said that it is difficult to locate, you do need a good map to find La Roque sur Pernes. Upon arrival you will find the chateau has breathtaking views. It is not every day you can sit in your Victorian roll-top bath with the window open and have views over vinyards and hills with no fear of anyone seeing in. The room are super! The one that was recommended to us had vaulted ceilings, a large and comfortable canopied bed and a huge bathroom with the aforementioned roll top baths and a walk-in shower.
The owner, Jean was most accomodating and went out of his way to be helful and of assistance. he cooked the evening meal, he is a Parisian - trained chef, and served it to us on the terrace. Life a Chateau la Roque is slow-paced. if you go there expecting the slick service of your traditional Relais et Chateaux hotel you will be disappointed. Jean takes his time to ensure things are just so! The pcae of things suits not just the establishment but is pleasing change from other hotels.
We had a wonderful stay. Jean's English is perfect which compensated from must less than adequate French. Overall a really relaxing hotel with wonderul views and lovely food. Woukd we return? Certainly!

The Chateau has been lovingly restored by Jean and Chantal who were concerned to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The hotel has 5 rooms/suites and its several terraces on the hillside provide plenty of places to relax in with great views. We stayed 4 nights in the comfortable large Ventoux chambre which was simply but very tastefully furnished and had a mezzanine bathroom with a rolltop bath you can see in the website photos. The unusual swimming pool is cleverly carved out of the rocks and is a great place to come back to cool off.

The breakfasts were very appetising and whilst there was no menu, we dined outside and ate 2 superb dinners from ingredients purchased on the day which made the experience even more pleasurable. I had the best plate of cheese I have ever eaten.

If you are looking for somewhere off the beaten track for a restful stay with hosts for whom nothing is too much trouble, look no further. I wholeheartedly recommend it and hope to return one day.

I can't remember, sorry, how it was booked. It was a business trip for us. John the host was amazing how he took care of his guests. I rate this the highest quality of vacation spots. Respect the others who might be staying there, and respect the owners by NOT bringing or playing radios or tv's. This is a quiet getaway and should be treated with the utmost respect. I would stay there again and again. Wish I was there right now!!!

It was heavenly! Jean & Chantal couldn't have been more wonderful. The Chateau is beautiful and the gardens and views were magnificent. I can't wait to return. Nor can my daughter's and husband. Such was my children's first experience in France and have been spoiled. They expect the grace and hospitality in all places now. Sadly they will have to learn other wise. Our time spent was much to short and upon our return it will be the only place we stay. I could have spent a month. Heavenly food & wine. Jean & Chantal are so gracious and extremely talented in the art of making you feel most welcome. Memories still dance in my head and bring such a smile. Thank you from all of us.

  • Liked — EVERYTHING.
  • Tips/Secrets — I am a very easy traveler and I am not that interested in being entertained. I like quiet, clean, gardens, good food and wine, and the feeling of peace. Not everyone is looking for the same thing and have to be on the move constantly. I like to enjoy the area that I am in. As I say I don't have to have lots of activity to please me. The beauty of a place like this is just to slow down and enjoy.

Dear Travellers

Our stay at Chateau La Roque was par excellence itself.

The accommodations were spacious, spotlessly clean and superbly peaceful.

The best of all was our Host Jean Tomasine and, for the weekend, his wife Chantelle. Two more gracious and pleasant people your are very unlikely to meet. Jean also Knew just about everything there was to know about the surrounding are, when to visit the markets, walks to take and where all the interesting sites were to be found - and he knew what was happening and at what time.

Jean cooked for us (he is a Paris trained chef of many years) and talked eloquently, but unobtrusively about the ingredients and their preparation. Truly a magnificent and memorable occasion.

Lord only knows what it would be like here with the blossoms out.

If only we could have stayed longer.
