The Hotel Captain Cook
Ranked #5 of 74 Hotels in Anchorage
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 13, 2013

The Captain Cook was fantastic in every way -- lots of old-style elegance and nautical character that you wouldn't find in a chain (be sure to check out the grandfather clock on the main level...it's a stunner!), delicious food (especially at the Crow's Nest on the top floor), excellent service, beautiful and spacious yet cozy rooms and hallways decked out in warm golds and bronzes, gorgeous views of the Chugach Mountains over the city from the windows (particularly at sunset), and impossibly comfortable beds. We were even surprised with a complimentary upgrade to a huge 2-room suite!

Another wonderful aspect of the hotel was its location; we were able to walk to almost every single place on our Anchorage hit list -- the art museum, the coastal trail, and several different shops and restaurants -- and the rail station and bus stop were also within easy reach. Its location in town was safe, clean, and peppered with galleries. We could not have chosen a better "base camp" for our urban excursions!

The price tag was a hefty one to be sure, but well worth every penny -- if funds permitted, I would happily do it all over again.

We stayed in a 2-bedroom suite which, as it turns out, is really just 3 regular rooms linked together with one of them functioning as a living room area. Everything was clean and spacious but a bit outdated. The breakfast in the main restaurant was good, but service was pretty slow (this seems to be the norm throughout Alaska). Location is perfect for walking to everything in downtown Anchorage and we had a great view.

We did have one issue where we left an iPad in the room when we left and seeing as we were on a tour we couldn't return for it for a week. We called the hotel immediately and they said housekeeping had found it and would hold it for us. However, a week later, they said they had lost the iPad the housekeeping office. This was extremely frustrating but they eventually apologized and provided a BestBuy gift certificate for the cost of a new iPad, which fully resolved the issue. They get high marks in my opinion for this unprecedented display of customer service.

Overall, a great option in Anchorage.

Dear lucygertrudis,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. We appreciate your review and we're pleased to see you enjoyed your stay. I am very happy you loved the view from your suite and dined with us in the Cafe for morning breakfast. I am sorry we misplaced your IPad. Sometimes those things happen and I believe it's the steps we take after those unfortunate events which sets us apart. We were more than happy to replace it and I hope you had a great vacation in Alaska. Until next time, take care!

Staff was rude. They say they are family friendly but there not. More of a business hotel. If you don't do valet parking you have to drag your bags up a couple thing of stairs. The carpet in my room was disgusting. Room service was outrageous. Sure it was fancy but wasn't what I expected felt very welcoming by most of the staff and they were more concerned about making sure they corrected me than help me find my way around. Would never recommend them. Stuck up old business people only for this place.

We were brought here on the land portion of a "cruise tour". Room was adequate with a nice view and staff was friendly. We arrived late and tried to dine in the roof top restaurant, The Crow's Nest, which we had heard was nice. It was late in the evening. One of our party was told she had to change her shoes which were too casual. After being told that we could order "small plates" and drinks we learned that the only offering was a full course meal. Our waitress was not overly friendly and, so, we left and on the way out another group stopped ours and complained about the "bait and switch" tactic. Anyway, we ate in the bar on the ground level called "Fletcher's" and had a lot more fun with casual dining. The next morning we dined in The Cafe which was swamped with people cruising. Service was very slow but the food was decent. If you are going on a "CruiseTour" leave yourself plenty of time. Also, if you choose to walk around downtown Anchorage at the end of June watch out for the hoardes of mosquitoes!

Dear phishlover,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. We appreciate you sharing your experience with our TripAdvisor audience and I would like to take this opportunity to address your comments in a positive way.

I apologize that you didn't enjoy your time in the Crow's Nest. The Crow's Nest is Anchorage's only 4 Diamond Restaurant but is also very welcoming by offering full dining options in both the main restaurant and the lounge. The dress code is business casual and we offer clothing in case you didn't pack the attire.

Happy to see you enjoyed Fletcher's. We have multiple dining options in the Hotel to fit all our travelers needs.

Normally downtown Anchorage is mosquito free unless you're walking on the Coastal Trail by Westchester Lagoon.

If you ever make it back to Alaska we'd love another opportunity to take care of you and your family and provide a great stay.

Sincerely,
Hunter R. W. Edelen

Eat on the top floor and get a great bottle of wine from the cellar. The Gym and pool on the bottom floor, very welcoming in the winter. Great massage! Relaxing and beautiful views. Right in the center of town.

Lived in Ak for 28 yrs never stayed at Cap't Cook. Being gone 18yes and staying at the hotel was really cool. We loved feeling like a 1St class tourist in our old home town. Rooms May not be brand new but the vintage history is rich. Just loved it allllll♥♥

I had an excellent time at The Hotel Captain Cook from the time my taxi dropped me off at the welcoming front door to the the time the hotel shuttle drove me to the airport to go home.

The staff we extremely friendly (Doorman, sommelier, waiters, front desk, bartenders, concierge etc.).

The food and drinks were excellent. I had cocktails in the Whales Tail and dinner in the Crows Nest.

The room was extremely clean and very spacious. The bed was heavenly and after a long hike on a glacier it was exactly I needed to end the day.

The location was also great. We were able to walk to restaurants, bars, shopping, and museums.
