Chilkoot Charlie's (or "Koot's" as it's officially been known since 2015) is a mega-bar/nightclub that provides a distinctly Alaskan and one-of-a-kind night out that you won't find anywhere else. Originally opened in 1970, it is located on Spenard Road (2 blocks or so from Northern Lights Blvd) on the edge of "Midtown" Anchorage. It is a VERY popular establishment, and while they have a dedicated parking lot across the street, it's not very big and it can fill up fast, depending on when you visit. Overflow parking then spills onto whatever spots you can find on the street. On Friday and Saturday nights, parking can be very difficult to find during peak hours.

"Koot's" itself is one large building that houses 10 different bars, 3 dance floors and 3 stages. They feature live music, DJs (playing Top-40 Radio hits and hip-hop), karaoke, comedians and other live acts (open mic nights, open deck nights for aspiring DJs, Burlesque Shows, etc). They even have a small arcade featuring classic pinball machines and arcade games of yesteryear. Each of the bars has its own unique theme: the Swing Bar, Ice Bar (featuring a 25' bar top of solid ice!), Russian Room, North & South Long Bars, The Deck (an outside bar) and the wildly popular Bird House (featuring tons of bras, panties and lingerie hanging off the walls---it must be seen to be believed), among others. Food is available in several locations inside, the largest being the Alleyway Grille, which serves up a reasonable selection of bar foods, snacks, appetizers and larger fare (such as burgers, burritos, pizza, etc). Food prices are reasonable for Alaska and the quality is pretty good. You're not going to get premier foods here, but you'll find the offerings tasty enough. Drink prices, like any bar, are a rip-off....BUT...for a mega-establishment in Alaska like Koot's, they aren't overly pricey. I don't drink very often and when I do, I have pretty discerning tastes. Koot's carries a remarkably vast selection of alcoholic beverages to imbibe, from your run-of-the-mill beers and liquors, to much higher top-shelf selections for more selective, "suave and refined" (snobby?) patrons. Consider me in the latter category. Lol!

I used to DJ and hang out at Koot's a lot back in the late-90s/early-2000s and I used to LOVE the place. I rarely go there anymore because it's changed too much. It always used to be crowded (sometimes to the point of being hard to move), and that is still true today. On peak nights, there is regularly a line outside of people waiting to get in, due to the place being at maximum capacity. When that happens, they do a 1-for-1 admission, where they let 1 person in for every one person who leaves. The wait to get inside can be an hour or more. In the middle of winter when it's really cold outside, that wait will get old FAST. Some other complaints of mine deal with the fact that the place evolved over the years and some of the things that were really cool in the past are no longer the case now. For example, in 2001, you could go into the Swing Bar to find them playing Swing music and people Swing dancing. They even taught Swing dancing classes during the week! Today, "swinging" into the Swing Bar will find a DJ playing the same hip-hop (rap) that the other 2 DJs are playing elsewhere in the place. The "Space Bar" (as it was known locally--it's now officially the Russian Room) used to play some remarkable electronic dance music...but today, you'll hear Top-40 radio hits and hip-hop...and the same stuff being played in the Swing Bar and elsewhere. The diversity is gone. I get it, Koot's exists to make as much money as they can, and they need to cater to their clientele to stay in business...but it has killed what used to make the place so special. The ratio of men-to-women can be heavily skewed towards men, making it difficult to meet single ladies if that's your thing (I'm happily married now, but if I were still single, Koot's isn't the place I'd be looking to meet someone for fun, if you catch my drift). Old fart gripes aside (and I'm still in my 30s, thank you), I will also complain that the staff tends to be on the rude side, from servers to bartenders to security (especially). Staff at Koot's used to be AWESOME, and that quality has been lost over the years.

Is Koot's bad? No, not necessarily. They stay very busy for a very good reason. But if going to a horny male-dominated "meet market" isn't your cup of tea, then there are other places in Anchorage that are just as busy and fun to visit as Koot's. If you've never been there before, you owe it to yourself to visit at least once. If you love it, keep going there! If you don't, you can say you've "been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt."

My wife and I had a great time last night dancing and partying at Chilkoot Charlie’s. They had very good live music and reasonably priced drinks and many different bars with unique motifs all under one roof. It’s like bar-hopping in a bar mall. A great time was had by all.

This place is unlike any other. Several bars under one roof - Literally something for everyone. It is just incredible. and the wood work outside the building is awe inspiring. If you are ever in Anchorage, you must check this place out!

This is one of the best clubs I’ve ever been to. There’s several different sections with different music and activities in each one. I went there was live music, pool, shuffle board, dance music, hip hop, karaoke and a little food corner. Also an arcade corner. It was an awesome time.

Should be on the list of "must do" when in Anchorage. Place is eclectic and full of memorabilia. Bar staff very attentive and bar maid even took time to give us a quick tour. Up stairs was the Russian room full of decorations. Very interesting. They have a bar made of frozen ice. Back was recreation of old historic Bird Cage Bar. This place is full of history and a I highly recommend a visit.
