Older B&B stuffed with all things Alaska to the point of being junky. Hostess was very helpful and breakfast was very good though don't know how she had room to cook in the kitchen. The bathroom in a closet did not work well for us.

We were not impressed whatsoever with this B & B. It's located in a very run down and bad neighborhood. It was filled with clutter throughout the residence... I agree 100% with Danielle055 I felt claustrophobic... The breakfast was just ok.. We stayed in the Denalli Room which is right next to the dining room/kitchen. We could hear every noise.. every conversation.. So much for sleeping in..in the morning... On our 2 week tour of Southcentral AK, staying at several B & B's, this was the worst by far. I would not recommend this place whatsoever!!!

This is a quiet, older B&B close to downtown. If you are looking for modern rooms and amenities, you may want to give this one a miss, but it was a fabulous experience for us. Carol was very helpful in several ways, including coming up with a couple of ways to entertain the children. The garden in the back was a little run down, but very pretty, and the children played in it for several hours all told, and I spent a couple of hours out there myself. There is an excellent sitting room for guests upstairs with substantial resources for visitors to Alaska. Carol herself is a virtual walking encyclopedia for Alaska visitors. Due to being a converted home, there are some awkward bits in the rooms, including at least one really tiny restroom upstairs, and light switches in odd places and such. The downstairs room can be a bit noisy since it is right next to the dining room and a television set. The breakfasts really sets this place apart. We had three breakfasts, and they were completely different. One breakfasts had multiple fruits in it, all picked and processed by Carol. She seemed to know the life history of every ingredient in every meal. I am hard pressed to think of any time I have had such flavorful breakfasts. It was truly an exceptional experience.

Room Tip: If you don't need the bigger room (no kids) stay upstairs. Some of the bathrooms upstairs are very small.

Big Bear is so full of "stuff" that you become claustrophobic--stuffed bears, plastic bears, resin bears, bear pictures, bear skins--everything but a bare table top on which to put your own things.
Bad neighborhood--plus a broken window hinge in the Denali room that I had to wire shut myself because the owner just shrugged when I told her about it. Breakfast is admittedly good--but don't peek into the kitchen; it too is cluttered beyond belief with piles of books and papers in the food prep area. Never, never again!

Room Tip: Don't!

As others have mentioned in a iffy neighborhood. We heard gunshots one night (it was very warm and the windows were open.) but still very convenient to downtown and airbase. Very good breakfast but be prepared - if you are in a hurry you may want to take a pass. Lots of mementos - bear rugs etc. Good value just a little too dated for us.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms are smaller and have small baths. Denali is downstairs and large enough for family.
