“Try the Bar”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2009

We could not get into the restaurant at the Crow's Nest (atop the Captain Cook Hotel) so we had wine and appetizers at the bar. If the food in the restaurant is as good as the bar, it is well worth the (rather high) price.

There is a credible, reasonably priced wine list and a selection of large sized appetizers to that should please
anyone. If nothing else, try the halibut sandwich and the crab covered macaroni and cheese.

An easy going, no rush atmosphere, good service and servings big enough to make you forget a formal dinner.

“Great '60s vibe decor in the bar but the too-fancy food falls short”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2009

I ate in the bar several nights in a row, but never was too thrilled with the food. It tried to hard and failed to deliver. The best choices I found were the fish and chips (potato chips, really) and burgers with, yes, more potato chips. Still, the service was friendly and quick, the quality of food was good and the view from up on the 20th floor of the Captain Cook Hotel was great. Would definitely recommend it, but get there early or you won't get a table.

“The Crows Nest deserves a fifth diamond!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2009

The Crow's Nest, Alaska's only four diamond restaurant is located on the 20th floor, right at the top of world class Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage.

Even before its acclaimed wine list, highly professional team and Pacific Rim haute cuisine starts to woe you, the 180-degree views of Alaska's largest city takes your breath away.

The restaurant lays claim to one of the most extensive wine lists in the world. (See Wine Spectator) We enjoy Sauvignon Blanc and were pleased to see local, American, Australian and South African choices of this varietal on the winelist.

Fresh burgundy orchids bleed onto crisp white table linens, decked with fine holloware and solid silver cutlery.

Starters:
Thai yellow curry coconut King Crab soup with napa cabbage and scallions. Sweet, fresh local crab punched with delicate and powerful thai flavours; the perfect pacific rim fusion. Heavenly.
Open-Faced Crab Ravioli with mushrooms, fennel, peas, crispy Parmesan and Truffle butter.

Main:
Decadent grilled File Mignon and Foie Gras with truffle macaire potatoes creamy greens and shallot Worcestershire confit.
Seared Alaskan Salmon steak, served on the same day it was pulled from Arctic waters. On a bed of Peruvian potato puree, wild mushroom, blueberry ginger vinaigrette. One word: excellent!

Desert was the crunchiest and creamiest creme brulee and an ample cheese platter with fresh berries and nuts.

Aaron was an eloquent, dignified, efficient and attentive server.

Liked the good distance between tables which adds privacy to a most memorable dining experience.

Its after 9 am but in the land of the Midnight Sun - there is still a couple of daylight hours left in August to enjoy the wraparound views of Anchorage until we depart for Blues Central, the place in town for live music.

The Crows Nest deserves a fifth diamond!

US Dollar 150 for 3 courses + wine.
