Beautiful ride from Anchorage to Seward. Lot's of mountains, lakes, wild life. Very relaxing and everyone got to enjoy. I'm the one that usually drives. So I miss a lot!

We travelled the Alaska Railroad in different stages and went through Anchorage three times. On all occasions the service given was good and well organised. First you book in your cases and tell the guys where you are travelling to. Then you go into the booking office to redeem your travel voucher for your boarding pass and then you board the train. All seating is assigned. The depot has a small gift shop and coffee stall for your use while you wait. If you want to pay extra travel Gold Star for a better view of the scenery.
My only grumble is when you get back to Anchorage and pick up your bags most people require a taxi, there are plenty of them but no formal queueing system so it is a free for all. I don't know if this is something the railroad could organise.

Out tour was booked through a travel agent. Rail Clerks enter your last name and verify your license and within minutes your boarding the train. Lots of building character that made the adventure even more special.

The depot in Anchorage gets a little crowded, but the train ride is wonderful. We road to Denali and were disappointed we were advised to take the bus back to Anchorage after our visit at the NP. Definitely spend the money and go Gold Class in the glass-domed upper car. Have a drink or three and relax and watch the gorgeous Alaskan landscape go by. Great dining car with windows to keep enjoying the scenery as you eat. Don't waste the entire trip trying to jump up and take photos. Relax and enjoy!!

Took the train to catch our ship in Seward. Great way to get there. Leave a bit early 6:45 AM. Give your bags to the cruise line porters (in our case Royal Caribbean) and you don't touch them again until you are in your room on the cruise ship 8 hours? later! The train has young adults/high school students acting as guides to explain the various sights along the way. They do a very good job. There is a dining car, although we did not try the food on this trip. City of Seward has a free shuttle that takes you around the main town sites and will also drop you off at the cruise terminal. Overall a very good value.
