Booked a vacation package through the Alaska Railroad and couldn't have been more pleased. Organized, great service, pleasant employees and not a problem to be found! Depot is clean, easy to get to and has plenty of info for the traveler venturing out from Anchorage.

I have taken the Alaska Railroad numerous times, and have loved it each time. The train trip from ANC to Fairbanks is a long one - a perfect way to let time stop, take it easy, nap, read, hang out in the dome car, eat some good food in the dining car, converse and get to know fellow passengers, and get lots of great information about Alaska. By car the trip takes 6-7 hours, and by train, 12! The conductors are very friendly, and the AR hires young students, trains them thoroughly as tour guides, and they are full of a lot of information about the state. There is some beautiful scenery all along the way - and the last time I took the train I saw six black bears and numerous moose.

The best trip on the Alaska Railroad, however, is the trip from ANC to Seward. The canyon out of Portage is fantastic, and the scenery unbeatable the whole way - Turnagain Arm views out of Anchorage, Portage flats area, then the beautiful mountains to Grandview, Moose Pass and then Seward. I loved every minute of this trip.

Thanks for taking the time to review the Alaska Railroad! And we couldn't agree with you more - the Anchorage to Seward route is amazingly scenic and in our biased opinion, best experienced from the GoldStar car.
Happy Trails!

A bit of the old alaska is around but the redo of this is nice. I really like the WPA art and art deco era of the lower 48 Rail Road stations but this one is good. And it works, the folks were very nice too. We took the train to Seward to take a ruse to Vancouver. Loved it all. I suggest Holland and Celebrity, and have heard Princess is fine too. But the others?

It was clean and the bathroom was well kept. The building is nicely heated. The security and employees were pleasant and efficient. This is not a large building so you will not feel lost. The gift shop has a good selection of Alaska train memorabilia as well as cute toys for small children. There is a coffee stand with pastries, muffins, sandwiches, bottled water and some pieces of fresh fruit, such as oranges and bananas. There is a Parking lot across the street that charges to park there.
