“Great Food At Reasonable Prices”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

We ate two early dinners at Southside bistro and we chose to sit in the bar area. The restaurant and Caesar salad had been recommended by a long time Anchorage resident. The restaurant and the Caesar were first rate. The hamburgers and pasta were excellent as well. Happy hour prices are very reasonable. We will return upon our next visit north.

“Amazing food in an unlikely location”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

The Southside Bistro was recommended to me by a local innkeeper as a great neighorhood restaurant. We made a reservation (highly recommended, at least in the summer) and were a little skeptical to see that the place is located in a unassuming looking little strip mall, next to a liquor store, sporting goods store, and similar businesses. When one walks into the place, though, any doubts are quickly erased. The restaurant is very attractive, and you quickly notice all the awards and accomodations the restaurant has earned and posted near the entrance (including perennial Wine Spectator Awards of Excellence for the wine list).

In this off-the-beaten-path location, it seems that the majority of the patrons were locals, not tourists. Given that the place was packed on a Tuesday night, with very few tourists knowing about it, that has to indicate that the food must be pretty damn good, right? Well, it sure was.

Everything we tried was outstanding. The starters we ordered were the house soup (a creamy roast garlic and sun-dried tomato soup) and Ceasar salad with local grilled scallops, and they were both incredible. The entrees (the daily salmon special, and the portobello-dusted halibut filet) were even better. The halibut was quite possibly the best tasting halibut dish I've ever tasted, not only in terms of freshness, but in terms of the creativity and flavor of the recipe. I will admit that I fully intend to steal that recipe and try to make it myself!

The wine and beer list are well thought-out, top-notch, and surprisingly reasonably priced. There is also a lower-priced, more casual "bistro menu" with salads, burgers, and really great-looking pizzas cooked in the wood-fired oven (which you'll see in front of you in the kitchen when you walk in)--we didn't eat off this menu, but we saw others who did and these items looked excellent too.

The service was top-notch and very professional. The prices, while not cheap, were quite reasonable as compared to Anchorage restaurants of a similar level.

I guess the best endorsement I can give this place is to tell you that we liked it so much that, the next day, we decided to go back again for dinner that night! (And the staff remember us from the previous night and thanked us for coming back so soon.) There were so many things we wanted to try the first night that we decided to go back and have some different things. And they were just as good as the first night's menu items!

“Good Food, Professional Service!”
Reviewed August 1, 2013

We made a reservation based on reviews found here. Use your GPS, this is located adjacent to a Carrs Grocery Store in what looks like a small strip mall. Glad we made the reservation because the place was packed! We had a nice glass of wine at the bar and were seated within 5 minutes of our reservation time. Attentive and knowledgeable waiter, who went the extra mile to insure my companion, who has a nut allergy, would not need to worry. Had a wonderful filet minon cooked to perfection, as well as the ribeye steak which was AMAZING. Really enjoyed the well-cooked and seasoned side dishes too. No room for desert, which looked and sounded wonderful too. Not open Sunday or Monday - so plan accordingly. Would certainly recommend - would also recommend you make a reservation as on Friday night the was a constant flow of diners - with people still waiting to be seated at 9 PM when we departed.

“Our favorite restaurant in Anchorage”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

We try to eat here at least once a month. Jens always has the freshest fish, meats, and vegetables available during the season. The desserts are to die for. Their beer and drink selections are among the best in town. The highest recommendation without any qualifications whatsoever. My wife will make a meal of two appetizers; I'll sometimes really digress and have a just a plain, ol' cheeseburger - the best in town.

“High quality”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Went there for dinner the other night. The halibut was fantastic. A very nice quiet evening. The staff was very attentive. The Bistro side has less a less formal menu with pizza and burgers. A great restaurant with high quality food.
