“good orchestra for small city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2012

I think the quality of the orchestra is very good, especially for the size of the city & area they have to draw upon. They do their own performances but also play for many visiting productions. It is a nice amenity to have.

“On a par with the very best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2012

When we moved to Anchorage from Seattle, we thought we would not be able to enjoy the type of Symphony experience we were used to. Boy were we wrong! This orchestra is conducted by Randall Craig Fleischer and it is apparent that he imposes strict discipline on the musicians. Some small community orchestras can be described as playing good music badly. That is most assuredly NOT the case with the ASO. We are happy subscribers to this orchestra and are truly transported every time we go. Randy also has impeccable taste in music selection, so even his exploratory works turn out very well.

“Astonishing talent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2011

As a lifelong lover of classical music, I was curious to see if the Anchorage Symphony could deliver memorable performances. I was not disappointed. All of the orchestral musicians were very talented, as is the conductor. Their renditions of Gershwin and Copland were fantastic- so much so that I'm going to buy season tickets! Alaskans owe it to themselves to experience this cultural event at least once.

The acoustics of the Performing Arts Center are worth mentioning, as well: I've sat in virtually every area of the auditorium for many shows, and have never once been let down by the audio quality.

“great musicians in Anchorage, from middle school and up”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2010

yeah, they're crazy good musicians, but sometimes the concerts can be a bit...long. but if you're really into long, classical concerts, go for it! but if you are looking for a more interesting (not quite as STRICTLY classical) and shorter of a concert, check out the Junior Youth Symphony (they're middle schooled audition kids). you may think they're bad because they're middle school, but they have great music choices, doesn't last as long as ASO, and they truly as AMAZING musicians! the conductor is great and lots of fun, and they play beautifully. the musicians are auditioned, so don't hesitate because you think the middle schoolers will sound bad, because they don't. they are significantly better than a normal middle school orchestra (not to insult them, but just for a comparison). Even the AYS (the auditioned high schoolers) are pretty good. NOT as good music choices as JYS, but still good, and shorter than ASO, but longer than JYS. the AYS is more experienced than JYS, but I must say that their songs are a bit more dry. But less dry than ASO (the most experienced). However, I say this as a person who likes modern music, but also interesting and exciting classical music. so overall, check out JYS for sure, and if you want one notch up (as in longer concert time length/more classical-y long music) go to AYS, and two notches up would be ASO (anchorage symphony orchestra). I didn't mean to put any of the orchestras down by this review, but it's jus my opinion. I personally like the JYS better, as they choose in my opinion interesting songs. You'd be surprised how JYS can find INTERESTING classical music as well as good non classical-ish type music. Like Pirates of the caribbean, pink panther, etc. They also find difficult/complex versions of these pieces. so whether you see JYS, AYS, or ASO, just be sure to see at least one of them during your trip!
