WE STAYED HERE FOR 2 NIGHTS IN SEPTEMBER 2019
Good value for money if you are looking for a no frills hotel and can put up with a bit of noise from trains and traffic, and the the odd 5.2 earth quake that we experienced, but that would have been the same at all the hotels.
One point that needs addressing is the silly pillows, come on Grand Hotel for gods sake lets have a proper size set of pillows they are not that expensive are they?
I can't see how a few people thought it was a bad hotel as it is not.
i would stay here again no problem.

Room tip: front rooms slightly less noise

Please stay anywhere else than here. It was noisy, stuffy and unfriendly. We were with a party of eight and all had the same experience. Rooms are roomy but old. Beds are small. Anything extra was a problem for the staff. And trains are constantly blowing their horns, day AND night.

We spent one night before catching a train. It is 200 metres to the station. Room had a small kitchen, bedroom and dining/lounge room. Good price. Guest laundry is a bonus. Close to eateries. We overlooked the railway line and so trains were heard during the night.

The Anchorage Grand is in a great spot. It's right next to the train depot, which was super convenient for us because we had to catch a train to our next destination, though has the downside of being a noisy spot, too. The hotel is walking distance from many good restaurants and there is also a walking trail along the water a few blocks down the street. Our room was big; the bedroom is separate from the living room/kitchenette. It did get very hot in the bedroom at night because they don't have A/C, but there is a fan in the room that we positioned in the window and that helped considerably. Overall, it's in a great location and it's clean, so I'd recommend it. If you have a car, there is a parking lot down the block with spots reserved for hotel guests at no additional charge. There is street parking too between certain hours.

We chose this hotel due to its proximity to the train station, as we had to check in at 6:00am. It was perfect for that. However, due to the warm temperatures that Anchorage has been having, and the hotel's lack of A/C, it was a bit musty in our room. We did find two box fans in the closet, so that was good, but the room isn't really designed for cross-circulation, so we slept on top of the covers all night. There is a sign on the windows saying not to leave them open longer than an hour, which is probably a good thing in most seasons, but not during a hot spell - I would actually recommend that the hotel do a bit of an air-out and open up all of the windows for a few days.

This room would have been great if we were staying longer than one night, as there is a full-size refrigerator, a microwave, and dishes. Alas, we were there less than twelve hours.

One other thing to note - although there is an elevator, there are about 6 steps from street level to the lobby and the elevator. There may be an accessible entrance that I didn't see, but something to check on if that is a concern!

John W, General Manager at Anchorage Grand Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded August 26, 2019

We appreciate you staying with us, and taking the time to post comments. The Anchorage Grand was originally an apartment building. It was built in 1950, and is actually one of the older buildings in the City of Anchorage. It is a little funky, but most enjoy its uniqueness and charm. It was completely renovated in 2000, and the furnishings and flooring, etc. has been updated a couple times since then. It is a very stout building, and is constructed of concrete and steel. The main entry is a split level entrance with about 6 steps down to the lobby, but there is a handicap ramp entrance to avoid the 6 steps for those who would rather walk right on to the lobby level and avoid the steps. The elevator is actually only about 50 feet from the front door, including those 6 steps, so once you enter the hotel, you will never need to walk far to get to your room, unless you choose to take the stairs. Plus, we are always happy to help with luggage when requested.
We regret you thought your room seemed musty. We did have to leave the hotel windows closed for a period of time this summer to perform exterior stucco work and painting. The summer months are when exterior work has to be done, so maybe you were here during that time period.
Thanks again for staying with us, and we hope to have you back.
Best wishes to you and yours!
Sincerely,
John, George and Team at Anchorage Grand Hotel
