Anchorage Grand Hotel

This is a delightful place to stay. There's no pool or fitness room, just large sunny comfortable rooms with enough kitchen facilities to make it possible to avoid expensive restaurants. Right now the sidewalk in front is torn up, but the hotel keeps another door open for easy access to the rooms and the lobby. Parking is in a lot quite close by. The lot is not owned by the hotel, but the front desk gives you a parking permit every day. Reception is friendly; homemade cookies and apples are at the desk for the taking. There is no breakfast room, but the staff leaves a bag full of breakfast goodies in front of your door every morning, along with the newspaper, if you so desire. What's in the bag are bagels with cream cheese, granola bars, and cups of instant oatmeal. We toasted the bagels and added water to the oatmeal cups, heating them in the microwave, to make a pretty hearty breakfast. We stayed in the corner queen suite on the top (5th) floor, which afforded a great view of the train station and the Alaska Railroad trains coming and going each day. The Anchorage Grand is located within just a few yards of many interesting restaurants and shops. You can walk easily to Bear Square, the visitor center, the pretty city hall and many urban parks. More modern-looking hotels are nearby, but we liked the unique nature of this independent hotel.

For a very reasonable price - by Anchorage standards - you get a room and a reception. The rooms consist of a small double bedroom, bathroom and a sitting/kitchen area. The rooms are clean if a little "tired". The hotel is convenient for the rail station and downtown shops and restaurants - both within 10 minutes walk.

The hotel does not have A/C - understandable in Alaska - but in July the rooms are very hot. You can open the windows as they have screens to prevent the mossies attacking. However, if you are at ground level the open windows must present a security risk - even Alaska must have burglars.
The biggest issue is the proximity to the rail station. The American train drivers seem to love to blow their whistle (several times) at the slightest opportunity particularly if they are near a station - and they don't care when they do it - late at night or 4 in the morning! So if you are not a very deep sleeper or don't use sleeping medication and you enjoy a good night's sleep then think twice about using this hotel. The problem is even more acute if you have to sleep with your windows open because of the heat. It's not the hotel's fault but ............
If you do intend to use this hotel my advice is make sure you get a room at the front (not directly facing the station) of the hotel on the 3rd or 4th floor (then you can leave your windows open in the daytime with relative peace of mind)

Room Tip: Front of hotel 3rd or 4th floor

It's a nice hotel next to the railway station. The rooms are big and clean. There were sometimes some train wistles, but with the windows closed not at all a problem at night. The complimentary breakfast, which you get delivered to your room, is basic but ok. We even got it very early (5.15 am), because we had to leave early for the train. We would stay here again.

Molly at the front desk is the best. Helped us out after a delay with the airline to make sure we would have a room when we did arrive. Very clean, large rooms, like having your own apartment. Great downtown location, walking distance to many estaurants and attractions. Highly recommended. Even bring complimentary breakfast to your door in the morning if you want it.

We chose this hotel on the road, because we'd cancelled a reservation at another hotel where we'd been unhappy. What a great find! It doesn't look like much from outside -- it has to be a converted apartment building, one of those 3 or 4 story walkups we all lived in after university. There is an elevator, and the rooms are huge -- they are really studio suites, complete with kitchen and living area as well as very comfy bed. Very clean, great location across the street from the weekend market (GREAT market), and an easy walk (4 blocks max) to all the restaurants and shopping in Anchorage. This would make a great base for a family staying a few nights in Anchorage. You can have continental breakfast and a newspaper delivered to your room. A special mention goes to Molly, who we checked in with -- very friendly, helpful in suggesting what to see and where to eat -- very welcoming and made us feel great. I'd recommend this hotel to my family and friends.

We had a great experience with this hotel. We arrived by train at night and it is close to the train station (can hear the trains at time, but didn't bother us). Walking distance to many downtown attractions. And provided a great continental breakfast to your room. The staff was very accomendating - the rooms very spacious. Would stay there again.

We had a very comfortable room for 4 of us complete with a small kitchen and the price was the best I found in downtown Anchorage. Very close to the train station for our trip to Denali. The hotel was within walking distance of several good restaurants. Can't forget the freshly baked cookies at 4:30 each afternoon! I enjoyed the views out the window even though McKinley was always covered with clouds. Staff was very friendly. Plenty of breakfast delivered to your door before 7:00.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing north and Mt. McKinley if you don't mind a bit of train noise.
