We very much enjoyed our stay at the Copper Whale Inn for one night. Efficient and easy check in with a nice host. Our room was great and we had an awesome view of the Cook Inlet and Sleeping Lady. I personally love a nice, soft, comfy bed and the queen bed delivered. The room (The Susitna Room) is smaller but well appointed and right off the lobby.

We planned our stay as part of a package that I purchased at a silent auction several months ago. Ironically we ended up staying while we attended another fundraiser event downtown at an unmentionable hotel two blocks away. It was the perfect location to enjoy downtown.

The European style continental breakfast was the perfect morning snack and the coffee was awesome. It was the perfect boost to help kickstart our day after a prior evening of many adult beverages.

We highly recommend the Copper Whale Inn if you are looking to stay at a smaller downtown property with local charm and hospitality. This may not be the place for everybody, but we certainly enjoyed our stay.

We flew into Anchorage late on a Saturday night and when we arrived at the Copper Whale Inn, instructions were posted on the door and two rooms were clean and ready to go.

Breakfast was good and fed a family of six which is no small task.

The hostess originally from Kansas (never asked her name) was very nice and easy to talk to about her experiences in Alaska.

The place is located downtown close to shops, restaurants and the coastal trail.

We would recommend staying there again.

The copper whale is located on the outskirts of Anchorage overlooking the sound. It a very friendly comfortable place to stay, close to staying with friends. Owner Gary and Staff were always very helpful. Absolutely OUTSTANDING continental breakfast, with high grade gormet breada, fresh fruit with coveted berries with yogurt and granola as desired. The only negative is lack of parking, but they even help guide you to free overnight places. Resturaunt directly beside Simons and Seafort expensive but woth every dime and top notch.

This smaller Inn often times has discount coupons in a local coupon book, which we like to take advantage. Most rooms are spacious and several have private bathrooms. There is one room on the street front that you'll want to avoid because of noisy traffic all night and early morning deliveries next door. Parking is almost non-existent. The manager is very helpful and responsive to issues. Lodging includes a generous breakfast of the continental type, but with more variety. The location is ideal for walking around downtown Anchorage. Some rooms have a nice view of Cook Inlet as well. I recommend this Inn, but urge the use of a coupon for two nights for price of one.

We collected a car at Anchorage airport and drove to the Copper Whale. It was fully occupied for our stay when we booked from Australia so we settled on the only room left a twin. Glenn greeted us on arrival and could not have been more charming or informative. The bedroom was small but this wasn’t a problem as we only used the room for sleeping and spent any idle time in the lounge room with its large stone fireplace. Here we met loads of other guests and swapped travel stories. The location is 10/10. While there’s no parking on premise, there is 2 hour metered street parking until 5pm daily. This wasn’t a great concern either as we were out all day every day and the 2 hours on our return was just enough time until restrictions had ceased till morning.
The Inn is a collection of 2 historic sandstone houses which survived the earthquake of 1964. The rooms are all different shapes and sizes and priced accordingly. The gardens were lovely as was the carp pond visible from our bedroom window. The Inn is at the far end of town, five minutes from the water front ( Cook Inlet) with a backdrop of the Alaskan mountain ranges, close to the corner of L Street and 5th Avenue. It’s just a 10 minute walk ( 5 blocks) on 5th Avenue to many high end shops, Nordstrom, JC Penny and the city centre. And most importantly it’s just a five minute walk to the local liquor store. Beware though the regulations on alcohol in Alaska are strict!!!! The legal age to purchase or consume liquor is 21 years of age and ALL people in the liquor store in a party MUST show identification including age. This apparently is to stop anyone having a DUI charge from getting friends to purchase alcohol for them. Thank God I’m an Ozzie!!!
The Copper Whale is close to Elderberry Park and the Cook Memorial. There is free Wifi. Breakfasts were amazing. A wonderful selection of specialty breads, jams, Danish pastries, fresh berries, fruit yogurts, cereals, coffee and tea were on offer daily in the comfortable communal lounge room from 6.45am till 10am. The bedroom was super clean thanks to Raul, very comfortable and the first time in Alaska on our trip that we were not over heated and that we had an open window. The bathroom was roomy with plush towels and toiletries. The complimentary computer in the foyer WITH available printer was great to confirm our onward flights. The Inn was ultra-quiet, we didn’t need ear plugs.
After check out Glenn encouraged us to make ourselves comfortable in the common room and snack on M and Ms for as long as we wished. He provided a bathroom too which was thoughtful.
You can’t beat this address or the hospitality. We’ll definitely visit again. A lovely stay just not long enough.
Eat at the 49th State Brewing Company, Glacier Brewhouse , Paris Club for great steaks and Ginger next door. Loved Orso, Yak and Yeti and Seven Glaciers too. Just didn’t have enough time here.
