Owner description: If you've missed seeing Arctic wildlife on your Alaskan adventure, you'll find it at this small zoo, where all the animals have names. You'll see moose, caribou, sheep, wolves, musk oxen, mountain goats and several different types of bears, including polar, grizzly and black bears.

Didn't really planned to visit this zoo on our Alaskan tour but was glad we went. Why, because of the cause. This zoo is a refuge for animals that were wounded or orphaned in their life in the wild.

The Alaska zoo is a medium size zoo and worth a visit! It's near the airport (about 10 minutes away) so if you have a late flight and it's summer, stop by. It's open until 9pm in summer months starting June 1. I got to see animals I missed in the wild including a polar bear, wolves, a snowy owl, a moose, and some more bears. Lots of other animals there too. You get a close up view. The fun part was the sign in front of each of the animals describing how they came to be at the zoo. In many cases, they may have been orphaned or found hurt. Nice zoo.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Alaska Zoo. The setting is charming and wooded and the animals are mostly local wildlife, many of them rescues (but set your expectations accordingly). We just missed the baby polar bear that had just been sent off to Albany :( We really enjoyed the Dall sheep, the owls, wolves and the bears. They do have tigers and snow leopards, which were beautiful and fun to watch. This was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours in Anchorage.

It's a small zoo, but I loved that the animals were often rescues! It's not as linear as a lot of bigger zoos are in the layout (which drove my husband nuts) but it's nicely shaded with lots of trees. The enclosures are small (IMO) but I can't say we saw the "behind the scenes" so I'm not sure if they had extra space behind some of the exhibits.

This is mostly a rescue zoo, so the animals are local creatures (well, local to Alaska), and many would not survive in the wild due to injuries. The snowy owl and bald eagles are beautiful, and the polar bears were the most active I've ever seen -- probably because they are not in the California desert! The setting in a forested park-like area makes for a nice, shaded walk, but it's not so big that you need more than a couple hours to see everything.
