Owner description: The Alaska Aviation Museum is located in the heart of Alaska aviation. It sits on the south shore of Lake Hood, the busiest seaplane base in the world, with more than 87,000 takeoffs and landings per year. A half-mile away is Ted Stevens International Airport, the air crossroads of the world. You can watch takeoffs and landings right from the museum. The museum presents one of the finest displays of Alaskan aviation history with many interactive displays, memorabilia, photographs, films and artifacts from personal collections of Alaska's pioneer aviators.

This museum has some aircraft used in Alaska.

There are some stories of the airlines and pilots but it seemed very light in what happens in Alaska and the museum more approaches what flew where and when.

I'd expect a museum to go more in depth about conditions of flying in Alaska and what bush pilots went through. Even the commercial part of the museum I think should go more into daily lives of the industry and not so much how much cargo can be held in an airplane.

We had a few hours to burn before our flight home. We decided to visit this museum. We were not disappointed. Lots of great displays and expertly restored aircraft. The staff was friendly and the lay out was easily negotiated.

I had planned a couple of hours at this museum, but ended up there for most of the day. This is an outstanding collection of Alaskan aviation history. There are 2 very interesting videos and some WWII history. You can also visit the shop where aircraft restoration is currently in process.

Really a good look at the history of aviation in Alaska and how important it has been, and still is, to the people that live here.

My boyfriend is a self-described airplane nerd, so this was a must stop on our trip.

There were displays about commercial airlines as well as the bush pilots (and a small military display) - all were interesting to me. They presented fact and artifacts without using too much verbiage (you know when you leave a museum and fell like all you've done is read a book?!). Even if you can't touch the airplanes on display you can get very, very close and look inside them. I enjoyed the variety of planes on display. For a small museum they really have a lot. Some are in different states of repair, but I still found them all interesting to look at.

The whole museum probably took us a little over an hour to get through. We also sat and watched the seaplanes taking off and landing. Not sure that it's worth the $10 admission if you aren't fairly interested in aviation or history of bush pilots. It's a bit far from everything else folks might want to see in Anchorage, but it's location by the airport make it an easy stop before taking your flight out of Anchorage.
