Bent Prop Inn & Hostel of Alaska
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 10, 2010

Alaskans are the most hospitable people, but John, the manager of Bent Prop inn surpasses all of them with his warmth! Still the hostel is professionally organized and there is nothing missing.
They have a great back yard where guests can relax and enjoy the sun in the long Alaskan summer evenings, and free internet access. The all structure allows wireless connection with your own laptop or you can use one of the computer available at the reception.
The location is good, very close to down town, the rooms are clean and comfortable. The kitchens are fully equipped and any travellers that wishes to prepare his/her own meal (isn't it nice once in a while?) can use the facility for free.
Also the hostel is well connected to the airport (one bus line), and John will organize your pick up/drop off at the airport.
He will do everything that he can to make you feel just like at home! An it does feel like it.
I'm a solo traveller, and Bent Prop Inn was my first location in Alaska, and the last one before departing after 2 months. I would recommend it to all traveller that need some time to get organized before starting their wonderful Alaskan experience.

My experience with the Bent Prop was great from the first telephone call until the end of my stay. The staff provided transportation to and from the airport. The hostel was the best I have stayed in throughout my travels in Europe and South Pacific. Fresh bed linens and pillow were provided on my arrival. This was a first for a hostel for me. The hostel is centrally located in Anchorage. It is easy to walk or take public transportation to destinations. Grocery and discount stores are within walking distance.
The staff went out of their way to match residents with compatible people, I had 2 roommates at times.. I stayed in a semi-private room.. My room had a full kitchen with full size refrigerator and private bathroom with tub. The common area has sofas and a large TV and free WI-FI.
The staff recommended places of interest and best of all arranged for my white water kayaking. Talking to other visitors in town the trip arranged by the hostel was a lot better than the ones arranged by their hotels and tours.. They have a whole host of trips available that can be done through the hostel. I also took a hiking expedition which was wonderful, however did not expect snow on trail lol. My family arranged for a surprise birthday pie.It was the best fresh homemade blueberry pie I ever had.
The staff acquainted me with public transportation routes and were accessible 24 hours a day. Local people were shocked to discover that this hostel has been remodeled so nicely. Some of the locals came to check it out for themselves. My family members are planning to stay here when they come to Alaska.

I was there 3 nights during my travel in Alaska and it was just perfect as a place to stay: clean and big rooms of just 4 people, good location (1-2 minutes from the bus station, Walmart and in a good part of the city), safe area and with staff who's working 24 hours a day. I came at midnight from Homer and I thought nobody will host me, but John was there- ready 24 hours- and was kind and patient. He showed me everything I needed. By the way: cheap ($25), computer free, clean linen, towel free and laundry you can do all the time (you don't need to wait morning). I was traveling in many cities in U.S. before and just a few hostels were perfect. I sincerely and warm recommend this hostel !!! Leana

This is a great hostel to stay in. Clean rooms and restrooms, friendly people, and an very helpful staff. John, the guy who runs the place, is a real old school proprietor, going out of his way to make you feel comfortable, and offering excellent tips on things to do and see.

John Forbes, the manager here gave awesome service from his fast friendly pick up at the airport, to regular walk throughs of the hostel, to greeting each guest by name with a good tip, advice or directions during the day, to even getting up in the wee hours to serve the needs of visitors. And this location was near perfect for me to prepare for a new career. The BentPropInn is within walking distance of the midtown DMV, the Alaska Dept. of Labor Job Center, the Transportation Security Administration's TWIC/HAZMAT office, NANA training, Environmental Management Inc Training, and half a dozen different employers who are key to North Slope jobs. Couldn't have found a more convenient location.

If you're looking for a Hostel, or just budget accomodations in Anchorage this is the place to stay. The options here range from a traditional Hostel experience in a shared dorm room, with bathrooms and commuity kitchen down the hall to a private self contained small apartment for yourself, or family. It is conveniently located in the Mid Town area, with shops, restaurants and the bus line nearby. Rates start at 20 dollars for a bunk in a dorm. It is 25 for a bunk en-suite (sharing an apartment with up to three others. The staff is fantastic. They'll even pick you up at the airport in the middle of the night. A clean, friendly place to stay. It feels safe which is something that I can't say for all of the Hostels I've stayed in. It gets my highest recommendation!!
