“A very different zoo”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

We've been visiting Doue zoo regularly for over ten years. Using the quarries as enclosures creates a far more humane and attractive environment for the animals. It also allows tall trees which provides a magnificent setting for species like snow leopards which are great climbers. It has a wonderful selection of uncommon animals. The zoo continually invests to improve the visit and add environments; the magnificent South American aviary is a great example.

“Really worth visiting!”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

Even if I am not very interested in animals and have no grand-children visiting, I must say that this zoo is such a lovely place just to stroll around. It is very well done with lots of green plants, trees and water and also much space for the animals.
And to feed the cute and kind girafs at the end of the tour is the high-light for most children!

“Excellent zoo. Skip the restaurant.”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

This is a simply fantastic place. Built in an old quarry, it is on two levels, and as you walk around it really doesn't feel like a zoo. You walk in and out of caverns and amongst large rocks, which always means it feels rather more private than a massive zoo. There are a lot of animals here, and well worth seeing.

The highlights - there is an aviary which you can walk into, and the birds fly around you. Inside the aviary you can climb to the top of the quarry, which means you are looking down on a lot of the birds, as they really do fly around you.

The giraffe enclosure, next to the restaurant, is spectacular. The walkway is set on the top of the quarry, so you are eye-to-eye with the giraffe. They are joined by zebra also, and it is a magnificent view.

Tips - the restaurant food was edible and home-cooked, so better than some places, but the portions were small and it wasn't great tasting. We passed a restaurant outside, and so next time I'd be tempted to skip the restaurant in the zoo itself, and go to the place along the street.

Tip 2 - in cold weather (under 10C) there are various animals that are kept in their pens, so aren't visible to visitors. These include some of the major attractions - hippos, rhinos, great tortoise. Obviously it is for the animals' welfare, but worth managing expectations with children if it is a bit chilly ;-)

“Superb zoo in a wonderful setting”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

This zoo is set in an old quarry, which adds a great deal of interest as you wind through the various sections of the zoo. There is a great selection of animals with good viewing areas.
The highlight is probably the aviary. There is so much to explore in this wonderful zoo.
Highly recommended as a great family day out.
