“Blows Shiros away! My new Top sushi place ever.”
Reviewed April 27, 2014

Where to start? I've been a die hard loyal Shiro's fan for ever. I've never sent anyone anywhere else and consider his place the pinnacle of good sushi, even by Asian standards.
That's over folks. I was with a friend that suggested we give Thai a try. She knows how picky I am about raw fish quality.
Heaven. Much better in all respects. Quality, service, choices, innovative selection, and it goes on. Seattle has a new winner in a very tough competition. Loved loved loved this place.

“Really Wanted to love it :/”
Reviewed April 20, 2014

As a sushi maniac I was super excited about Umi Sake House, but it left us disappointed. The service was bad, we were left waiting for her so many times and for so long. The sushi quality seemed very good however the beautiful bright flavors that sushi holds just weren't there. We also felt a bit bummed by the fact that the rolls come in such large quantities (10 big pieces per speciality roll) so this didn't allow for us to order many things and try lots different flavors which to me is part of the beauty in sushi, not to have a giant meal of all one flavor but rather to be able to sample from different tastes. The restaurant's decor was well done and very cool with an unexpected courtyard feel once you're inside, it was lively and fun with a young energetic crowd. There are way better dining option in Seattle and I am a little bummed to have lost an evening to this place.

“Come during Happy Hour”
Reviewed April 16, 2014 via mobile

Service was excellent. Great ambiance. Definitely come here during happy hour. We had the grilled garlic short ribs, Seattle roll, salmon skin roll off the happy hour menu, and the flaming tuna and first ave roll off the regular menu. All were good, but I would order the short ribs and flaming tuna over and over and over again.

Amazing sushi, great service. Ordered off the list of the special sushi available that day and had some truly delicious & artful stuff. Can't wait to eat there again!

“Best sushi I have tasted anywhere so far”
Reviewed April 5, 2014

I have visited Umi as par of a vacation weekend in Seattle back in November 2013. I am a sushi lover, I can live on it, and when someone like me says that the best sushi I have ever tasted was at Umi Seattle, the it must be a great place and for so many reasons that go beyond the menu. Here<s how my experience went:

1- Locaton
It is located in Belltown one of the nicest parts of Seattle. It is one of the most attractive areas because of the numerous restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs located everywhere, providing you with so many options before and after your Umi experience.
The place is located just on 1st avenue, so it is surly very accessible by car and you can find many public parking spots all around the area. It might get tricky finding an empty one especially evening times when people flock from everywhere to the area, but there are some parking lots close to it where you can park in peace of mind
The area is not too far from downtown, the Pike Market area, we were a couple so we went on foot all the way from Pike market and it did not take us more than 15 or 20 minutes to get there. So if you happen to be lucky to have a nice weather, I definitely recommend the small nice walk, otherwise just take a cab, they are relatively cheap in Seattle

2- The restaurant itself
The experience at Umi starts from the reception desk.. You enter the place from a regular narrow door that leaves to think that you are just getting to a normal place common to all others, but the decor soon shows up its exoticism. A blend of white, black and red mixing to make you feel like you are in a genuine Japanese place feeding your eyes before you start feeding your hunger.
Of course like so many places, if there are no places ready, you will be seated at the bar in a small wait for an available table. I definitely suggest that you order a drink there and taste how refreshing and simply how tasty their drinks are. their bar tenders are so good at preparing what you want. Start your experience with a nice drink and some edamame.
The main seating area is vast and very welcoming. It is formed by a series of tables well spaced from one another providing enough privacy and enough space for servers to walk between them without banging you each time they pass by.
There are tables of different styles should you prefer to be seated next to the wall, you will find 6 or so tables accommodating this need, or tables in the middle of the area with regular chairs putting you under a large lamp hanging from the ceiling, giving a beautiful feel to the place and lighting it up
The beauty of the place is mainly its simplicity knowing that it is a high end Japanese place

3- Menu and service
Things keep on getting better and you can feel how tasty things are just as you start looking at the menu. It is a very easy and simple menu, two columns of sushi with prices next to each. The good thing is that you have everything in sushi on it that you can imagine You might need the help of the servers to understand and couple of things on it, but you are definitely tempted to try everything they have, especially if you like suchi
The menu is divided between starters, main courses, and deserts. The starters are a must, try the miso soup or some tempura shrimps, they are really worth it and then attack your sushis. Sushis come in regular sushi, sashimi and rolls
I am not into sake but the person I was with ordered the warm sake and she had the best review of it stating that it was nothing short of soothing and a wonderful companion to the food
When it comes to taste, I never tasted so much flavor in Japanese food as much as i tasted at Umi. you can definitely taste every kind of fish you order between the rice and the vegetables. In a lot of sushi places I have been to, most meet tastes the same, it is not the case of Umi where you can make out the eel from the salmon from the crab

4- Service and prices
Well it is a 5 stars service to say the least. Servers know exactly whet you want and need and as soon as they feel that you are calling them they approach you with a beautiful smile asking how they can be of service
What is not mentioned on the menu, they sure know how to explain it ad leave you convinced. They know every item on the menu and can tell you how it is made so you know what to best choose from. I always ask a question at restaurants..."What do you recommend?"...most of the time, servers recommend the most expensive item on the menu. It is not the case at Umi as I kept on being recommended what the servers personally liked. Nothing better than being served good food by people who enjoy doing it and give you the feeling that they want you to be happy
Note that such niceties son't come in cheap, yet it is not too expensive. Expect a tab between 45 and 55 dollars per person if you order alcohol with your food

I definitely recommend Umi, it is the place to visit whether you live in Seattle or going there on visit. I loved everything about the place they even have a happy hour so it is a great place to hang out by after work for quick relaxing drinks a nice light bite.
If you are a sushi lover, make sure you pass by the place, reserve a day in advance and take your companion with you, you will really love what they have to offer
