Attraction details
Owner description: Kubota Garden is a 20-acre American-Japanese garden that was the vision of Japanese immigrant Fujitaro Kubota when he purchased the first 5-acres of logged off swampland in 1927. The garden grew to 20-acres and was developed concurrent with Kubota's landscaping business. He returned to the garden and continued its development after being incarcerated during WWII. In 1981, the 4.5 acre core was designated a Historic Landmark, and the City of Seattle purchased the garden from the Kubota family in 1987. The garden is an urban oasis, criss-crossed with streams and paths, ponds and waterfalls, rich with flora and fauna and a popular destination year-round. The garden is maintained by the City, and supported by the Kubota Garden Foundation.

It has beautifully maintained walkways and gardens, as well as a tour guide who is very knowledgeable about the local fauna and flora. Very kid-friendly.

“This is one of my very favorite japanese gardens I ever visited. I love going there.”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

There is tranquility, peace and the landscaping is magnificent! Every visit is a treat. One would never expect such a lovely place in the neighborhood of a Boeing field. It is a magical place any time of the year.

“Hidden suburbian hideaway”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

The Kubota Gardens is a place of peace and beauty in the middle of suburbia. I had heard about this garden and decided to explore this February. It was abit of a challenge to find but well worth it. The parking lot was pretty empty. It's amazing to be in the entryway across houses, then walk through the gateway into a peaceful tranquil setting. I loved all the waterfalls, bridges and hidden nooks. I plan to visit again in the spring when all the buds and flowers are blooming. Portable potties were available. One was for handicapped.

I brought friends from Japan to visit Kubota Gardens and they said it was the most authentic Japanese Garden they had seen in the U.S. Kubota is relaxing, inspiring, and a hidden masterpiece.
