“Ok, but you can do better”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

We stopped in Mamma M's because we were staying up the hill in a B&B, and were too tired to drive. A short walk down the hill brought us here, and it looked like a hip, trendy place with interesting sculpture in the outside dining area, and a sort of fusion of chrome and crystal inside. We like Italian, so we thought we'd give it a shot. We ordered salads to begin, and they were fine. We had a lot of flies buzzing around, and it was distracting trying to protect the food from attack. We both ordered pizzas- margherita for him, and an artichoke laden one for me. Mine had a lot more going on, and was worth the price, but his seemed more like a standard cheese pizza you'd buy for the kids. (we've had margherita pizza elsewhere and been blown away by the subtle taste interplay) Somehow our waitress sort of disappeared after delivery of our food (this was a Wed night) and we waited a long time for drinks and our bill. ( I always end up wondering if we're being punished for not ordering alcohol!) Considering how slow it was that night, one would hope they could have been a little more on the ball. I would not return there mainly because of the flies, but also because you can do better.

“Mamma needs some TLC!”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

Have always loved dining at Mamma Melina's so was bummed to have such a disappointing dinner. Not to busy for a Monday evening, not overly attentive staff. Ordered the beat salad, has always been fantastic. Today, tasted like someone opened a can and cooked it to death. Mush and bland! Waitress asked how it was so being the honest person I am, just had to tell her. One of my dinner companions also had this dish and voiced the same concern. She was great about it and took one off the bill. Now for the main course! Had risotto with shrimp. Way over cooked shrimp, chewing gum to be exact. One asparagus spear cut into tiny peices in the risotto. Could have gotten boxed risotto from the store and it would have tasted better. Save your money and your taste buds, try another place until Mamma's can get her groove back.

“Good food”
Reviewed September 6, 2012

Our food was very tasty even late in the evening. We had a beet salad and a pizza. Our server got distracted with something else and forgot to come back until another waited had to go find him, he provided complimentary desserts because we had to wait.

“Great Italian Food Near University of Washington”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

The night before my son explored the University of Washington we had a truly delicious dinner at Mamma Melina. Staying at the Silver Cloud Inn University, we walked to the nearby high end mall (don’t miss Fran’s chocolates), and walked to Mamma Melina. We were graciously greeted and seated at a finely set table. The service was superb and made our five year old grandson feel right at home. Showing our room key, we were treated to a complimentary and delicious appetizer. The best was yet to come with our dinner choices.

My wife had the Fettuccine alla Bolognese - house made natural veal and Painted Hills beef Bolognese. My son had the special of the day which was Bucatini Delicati Bucatini, baby manzo meatballs, pancetta, fresh mozzarella, basil, homemade sugu. I had a brick oven cooked pizza Capricciosa with tomato, artichokes, black olives, mozzarella, and Italian ham (held the mushrooms). My wife is quite a good cook and had an Italian best friend from high school on. Sampling my son’s dish, she said that the sugu was the equal of her friend’s grandmother’s recipe. But she also adored her Fettuccine alla Bolognese. As for my pizza, it was so delicious and complicated that I would hesitate to call it a “pizza” to avoid unfavorable comparisons.

If you are in the University of Washington area be sure to stop by Mamma Melina for one of the best moderately priced ($13-$15) Italian meals you are ever likely to enjoy. Check out their menu online. Mangia!

“Great fresh Italian food”
Reviewed August 4, 2012

Wonderful food, excellent selection, eggplant parmesan is a favorite. Great for entertaining or dinner for two. Wonderful Neapolitan pizzas for those with less adventurous tastes.
