This tiny restaurant in the Wallingford area is very popular and with good reason - the dishes are distinctive in flavor and vastly different from standard fare although they carry standard names. Try the rich, savory mole enchiladas...the chili rellenos (their most popular dish which in itself speaks for this food)..enjoy the spicy salsa with the crisp tortilla chips. The best time to eat here is mid-day or before the supper rush.

I have to come back because they gave us a taste of thier chicken lentil soup. Delicioso! Chile relleno, carne asada, enchilada were all tasty and slightly different from the usual Mexican food. The cook said it was food from Guanajuato.

My son and I wandered into the Chili Pepper, not knowing what to expect and were very pleasantly surprised. While the menu has several familiar dishes for those accustomed to Americanized Mexican fare, such as enchiladas, burritos and flautas, the real stars are the traditional dishes from central Mexico. The owner waited our table and was very laid back and friendly. When I asked for a recommendation between two dishes I didn't recognize, he said he shouldn't be deciding for me and immediately walked off to the kitchen, to return shortly with tastes of each sauce on a tortilla chip. Both were intensly flavorful and complex. That's the way to go at this restaurant - try something new and be ready for a taste explosion. The mix of peppers and other ingredients electrify your taste buds. The mild beans and rice add a good compliment, along with the warm soft corn tortillas. The special dishes are served with a cup of lentil soup, which is a bit thin on the lentils but also very flavorful. Prices are a little high for typical Mexican fare, but this place can be far from typical.

Terrible dinner. The service was laughable. We asked for more salsa (which was the best thing about this place), and she took our bowl and never returned. Appies were served without utensils, napkins, or plates. Our waitress went home in the middle of dinner. No drink refills offered. The food was even worse. Mole chicken was inedible. My wife's dish was terrible too. I urge anyone reading this to go anywhere else.

Authentic Mexican food. Delicious, but be warned- very rich.
