“Terrific restaurant!”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

We have eaten in this restaurant four times and would definitely return to this restaurant every time we visit the area. This is one of our favorite restaurants in the Pacific Northwest. I believe they have three locations but we have only eaten at their location near the Seattle Space Needle so parking be a bit difficult there but you can park in a garage very close by for $5.00. The food at this resaurant is excellent, with good sized portions. It is also health oriented which is something we both appreciate. I always order the steel cut oatmeal which real ends up being a meal in itself. While the price seems a bit expensive for oatmeal, they have a side bar where you can add many different items to the oatmeal and add as many and as much of these as you wish. I remember two of those items being blueberries and rasberries which, of course, are not cheap if you buy them at the store so the steel cut oatmeal really turns out to being a good deal! The employees are also very nice and efficient there. One possible drawback is it can get rather loud there when there are a lot of customers so I would recommend going early, if possible.

“Noisy, crowded, good food”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

We went for Sunday brunch and enjoyed good, mostly organic food that was well prepared and of quality ingredients. I had the gluten free crepes with green tea/ cream filling - it was very good, a little bit too sweet for my taste. The berry table option is worth the money. They serve good quality tea but the coffee is just O.K. . The service was friendly and pleasant. This place is very popular, crowded and it is hard to have a conversation, but the food is worth it. It is important to make a reservation if you do not want to stand in line.

“Eclectic food and tasty”
Reviewed September 9, 2012

This resturant located on the same street as the University Inn has unusual American food fare, but with a healthy twist. Unusual breads and sandwitches will give you a great lunch. Reasonably priced, in an area loaded with a university student population and the fast food resturants nearby

“Fabulous Breakfast”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

We had heard about the Portage Bay Cafe and were eager to try it. Having flown in from the East Coast the day before we woke up really early and got to their University District location as they opened on a Sunday morning.

It was a really nice experience. The menu was large and everything was delicious. The server was REALLY laid back but very personable. The only problem is that by the time we left, the place was full. So, if you can rise early on a weekend it is a nice choice. There are two other locations in Seattle but I cannot speak for them.

“Trying a little too hard with mixed results”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

My wife and I came here for breakfast with high expectations that were not met. The server was like a character in a Prairie Home Companion satire of organic food snobs. She gave very detailed descriptions of each option but was not in any way friendly or attentive. In addition, for some strange reason she didn't mention that the chicken sausages (which she said were the only ones available) really don't go well with pancakes. (They were not sweet sausages, and they were packed with so many flavors that the overall intended effect (whatever that might have been) was lost, even if spicy Italian style sausages are what you happened to want to eat with your pancakes). The pancakes had so many ingredients in them that somehow they all got lost.

The best thing was the unlimited fruit topping bar. I think they would do better sticking to basic whole wheat pancakes without all the other ingredients and getting a box of Jones sausages if they don't want to make sausages that taste good with pancakes.

At these prices, a breakfast should knock your socks off. That didn't happen for us.
