Description: "A la bonne franquette" implies a breaking of the strict rules of entertaining A la francaise. Although the food at A la bonne Franquette bistro is prepared using traditional French techniques, Chef Hamed takes a number of liberties with his use of spices and flavors, influenced by his roots in Sudan and travels through Africa, Europe and the United States.

When we lived in the Mt. Baker neighborhood 12 years ago it was notable for the lack of restaurants or busineses. When we heard a new restaurant had opened we had to give it a try.

We were pleasantly surprised to find a French bistro with sophisticated, but not pretentious food, a great wine list of French and local wines and a territorial view to die for. A great spot for a date, an anniversary or to bring out of town family if you live in the Leschi - Mt. Baker - Seward Park arc of South Seattle.

Half of me doesn't want to write this review. I'm afraid I'll never get in again!

This place sits on 31st Ave S, which straddles a ridge that runs north/south through the Mt. Baker/Leschi neighborhood, and has views both to the west (Seattle) and the east (Lake Washington, the I-90 bridge, Bellevue in the distance). What an awesome view corridor. What a perfect spot for a charming bistro!

The ambience here is perfect! Picture the quaint little neighborhood bistros in Paris: small, intimate, beautifully simple yet elegant. Same with A La Bonne Franquette. Everything is perfect! Without a hint of French "attitude!" The view of downtown Seattle is beautiful! But here you are tucked away from the hustle, bustle and parking woes of the city and tucked into a nice, warm, cozy little spot with an excellent wine list, a thoughtful menu that is perfectly prepared, and an excellent wait staff.

We've dined here 3 times, and each time we brought another couple. Every time, it was a smashing success. The menu is varied, and everything is perfectly prepared. They have the typical bistro items (cassoulet--with a twist!), fish, lamb, chicken, steak, phenomenal salads and appetizers. It doesn't matter what you order, it will be scrumptious! The wine list is carefully chosen and they also serve great wine by the glass. And the desert! Oh my.....

I don't care WHERE you live. You will LOVE A La Bonne Franquette! It's a winner!!

Small, typical bistro menu beautifully prepared and presented. Sides as good as the entrees. Good wine list. Agree fully with the first review. Our delicious dessert was the pain perdu - wonderful and not excessively sweet.

Simply excellent! Located on the Mt. Baker/Leschi Ridge with an incredible view of downtown Seattle and Elliott Bay, A La Bonne Franquette is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. The menu is presently limited but items are expertly prepared with fresh ingredients, exquisitely presented and delivered by friendly servers. We've tried a number of dishes, some of which are no longer offered, and include lamb shank with root vegetables, lamb stew, portabella mushroom, french onion soup, salad verte and steak grille. Our all time favorite was their rosemary chicken with lentils. Seasoning was perfect, cooked to perfection and most importantly it was on our slow-carb diet. This dish was a savory delight...and even healthy. They frequently suggest wine pairings which have complemented our dishes. We've even been allowed to taste test prior to ordering if we've chosen. And the one dessert we've experienced was to die for...the almond cake! Unfortunately for us, A La Bonne Franquette has become more than just a local gem. Listed on OpenTable, this restaurant has become fashionable, and it is now harder to come by reservations during prime dinner hours and at times convenient for us. Truly a sad development, since we supported them when they were just a sign in the window. But we suspect that they'll at least be around for a long time :-)
