Owner description: The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (locally known as the Ballard Locks) is a waterway system that connects the saltwater of the Puget Sound to the fresh water of the Ship Canal, which sits about 20 feet above sea level.  Boats enter the locks, the gates close and the water rises or falls to the level of the destination waterway.  Watching boats pass through the locks, exploring the 7 acres of botanical gardens and looking for fish on the fish ladder is fun and free entertainment that draws locals and tourists alike.

“The Salmon Fish Ladder”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 13, 2013

Boats travel through the Ballard Locks to go between Puget Sound (Salt Water) and Lake Union/ Lake Washington (Fresh Water). The Fish Ladder is also located here and you can watch the salmon travel up the ladder and then through glass panels observe the fish adjust from salt water to fresh water. A park ranger gives a talk regarding the history of the locks, the fish ladder, the life cycle of salmon, types of salmon that go through the ladder.

“A Must Visit”

A classic stop on what would be a Seattle essentials tour. Great location, fun to get to (gets you out of downtown). If the Salmon are there it's fascinating.

“A little walk, a little salmon watching, a little picnic...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2013

Great spot for taking a stroll and having a picnic. When the salmon are spawning this is a fun place to be and watch them jumping in the water and swimming through the locks. The slopped grass banks are a prefect spot for picnicking and watching the boats pass through the locks. On occasion you can spot seals gorging on fish or blue herons barking in the trees.

“One of our Fav's!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2013

On a sunny day, this is a great outing! We love hanging out watching the boats and the operation of the locks.
In September when the salmon are running, it's worth returning for that. Take a look at the fish ladders and be fascinated with the marvel of nature!
Summer they often have bands playing, so take your chairs or a blanket and go enjoy!!

“Might be more fun during salmon season”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2013

We hit the locks in October - got to see several boats go through, which is nothing spectacular if you've seen locks in action before. This is also where the salmon ladder is, but don't think October is the season for this, so we only saw a fish or two. Kind of a snoozer.
