Owner description: The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (locally known as the Ballard Locks) is a waterway system that connects the saltwater of the Puget Sound to the fresh water of the Ship Canal, which sits about 20 feet above sea level. Boats enter the locks, the gates close and the water rises or falls to the level of the destination waterway. Watching boats pass through the locks, exploring the 7 acres of botanical gardens and looking for fish on the fish ladder is fun and free entertainment that draws locals and tourists alike.

Our family, and group of visitors from Texas, took the boat tour of the locks. It was really good and very interesting. It was a little cool the day we went but we were able to go inside away from the wind.

Fun to see how the salmon, and the boats make it through. Lovely garden and a great place for a picnic

It was great to see the salmon swimming upstream from the underwater viewing area known as the "fish ladder". Walking through the botantical gardens and watching the boats pass through the locks was a nice way to spend the afternoon.

Great way to see an interesting procedure. The fish ladder is really unusual. The gardens surrounding the locks are an extra treat.

Had a local friend take me here during my visit. Thought it was very cool! Got to see a bunch of cool boats, nice gardens and salmon jumping all over the place. Seems like a pretty uniquely northwestern experience, highly recommend checking it out if you have time!
