Owner description: The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (locally known as the Ballard Locks) is a waterway system that connects the saltwater of the Puget Sound to the fresh water of the Ship Canal, which sits about 20 feet above sea level.  Boats enter the locks, the gates close and the water rises or falls to the level of the destination waterway.  Watching boats pass through the locks, exploring the 7 acres of botanical gardens and looking for fish on the fish ladder is fun and free entertainment that draws locals and tourists alike.

“Wow - had never seen locks before”

I always wanted to see Salmon in the locks, and this did not disappoint! There is really not too much else to see there, but I found it quite interesting. I want to go when the salmon are really running next time. There were only a few stragglers left when we visited.

“The Best Place to Visit!”
Reviewed February 26, 2012

This place is special to me and my wife. I took my wife to the locks for our first date. It's so romantic to watch the boats going through the locks, large, medium or small, it's fun watching the water fill up the locks and the boats rise to Lake Washington's elevation. It's educational in addition to being relaxing. Plan your next date tot he locks.

“Educational and beautiful park”
Reviewed February 24, 2012

Real interesting to watch how the ships and private yachts pass into the different channels of water. The park is beautiful and so relaxing. Cost is free except for a small fee for parking and worth a visit.
