Owner description: The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (locally known as the Ballard Locks) is a waterway system that connects the saltwater of the Puget Sound to the fresh water of the Ship Canal, which sits about 20 feet above sea level.  Boats enter the locks, the gates close and the water rises or falls to the level of the destination waterway.  Watching boats pass through the locks, exploring the 7 acres of botanical gardens and looking for fish on the fish ladder is fun and free entertainment that draws locals and tourists alike.

“Great gardens”
Reviewed November 7, 2011

We went to see the locks (which were very interesting) and discovered the gardens. They were a delightful bonus.

“right location - wrong season”
Reviewed November 1, 2011

We visited the locks in October so we only saw one salmon from the viewing room and we only saw two boats go through on their way to the salt water. If you go there during warmer weather this could be a dynamite spot to visit. Watch the salmon go upstream to die and watch the pretty boats go out to sea. Berkeley78

“A pleasant place to pass an hour or two.”
Reviewed November 1, 2011

Great place to just stand about watching the boats come and go. Being able to watch the salmon was fascinating.

“Century-old and still way cool”
Reviewed October 26, 2011

We try to learn lots about local daily life when we visit, so the locks were particularly interesting to these land-locked midwesterners. Nice park setting, public art, historic location, and working locks. Accessable by city bus with about 4 block walk.

“Cool Locks, No Salmon”
Reviewed October 25, 2011

I was too late to see the Salmon spawning, but it was a fun place to visit just to see the way the locks operated. If I had less time I probably would've skipped going here, though, since there are more interesting things to see closer to the center of things.
