We had the four course chef's special in this unique restaurant. Service and preparation was excellent. In old Ballard. Parking is a little tough, maybe offer valet?

Best meal we had in Seattle. 5 friends from out of town, went here our last evening with reservation, otherwise long wait. Reading reader tips and their website, we decided to have the Chef's choice dinner for the entire table. Wow! Was that a good decision! Multiple tapa like appetizers, the fried oysters with spicy aioli sauce we the best any of us had ever had. The charcuterie outstanding as was the tiny cups of puréed gazpacho. Next came scallops with an Avocado purée & radish/ cucumber slice garnish plus a piece of roast pork with roasted potatoes and eggplant. Three desserts to sample-dried blackberry cheesecake, strawberry sorbet, and a decadent chocolate mousse. With the money saved on the meal we had a bottle of white Gruner Veltlinger and a Wilmette PinotNoir, both very good.
We waddled out full of great food & wine for $84 apiece before tip, unheard of where we live-NYC & Santa Barbara.

We were originally scheduled to eat here on Sunday, Aug 11th. However, on Saturday, Aug 10th we decided to go to the Walrus and the Carpenter, also in Ballard. When we got to the WC we were told we would have a 2.5 hr wait. As it turned out, Staple and Fancy is in the same building, so we went there while waiting for our table and sat at the bar for drinks. After waiting for an hour we decided to simply eat at the bar at Staple and Fancy. There were four of us. We had the bucatini and the linguine with clams. The pasta was unbelievably fresh. The flavors were unreal. Donald, the bartender was extremely friendly (even though he was getting over some illness). The food was so good that we decided to keep our reservation for the 11th. This time, however, we got the chef's tasting menu. Unlike other tasting menus where you know what you are getting, here we had no clue. We were told that it was whatever the chef felt like making. This is the way to go at this restaurant. We had 6 or 7 appetizers, 2 pastas, a whole fish, a hanger steak and 2 desserts, all served family style. For only $45/person. The food was impeccable. Our server was outstanding (she even drank champagne and wine with us). To put this review in perspective, on our first night in Seattle we ate at Canlis, one of Seattle's finest restaurants. We had a great night and I am writing a positive review about that experience as well. But if I had to choose one for food, it would be Staple and Fancy. We have eaten at many great restaurants including French Laundry in Napa and Cellar de Can Roca in Spain (the world's current No. 1). I would put Staple and Fancy above French Laundry and a slight notch below Cellar de Can Roca.

I have been to Staple and Fancy twice in the last month, and both times I got the tasting menu. For me this is the way to go because you get to taste many different dishes. Is even better if you go with friends because you then have more dishes to share. All the food was great, particularly the scallops that were one of the main dishes last time. Is not cheap, but you get a lot of dishes for your money.

This place is in a great neighborhood, and I appreciate the talent of their chefs. Overall, we had an excellent experience. They did NOT skip a beat on service. Below are some highlights:

- We did the tasting menu chosen by the chef. Reasonably priced compared to other high end restaurants. One or two starter dishes we weren't too crazy about, not because of the quality of ingredients, we're just not big fans of anchovies, but that's the point right? Adventure outside your comfort zone!
- OMG, the rest of the meal was pretty darn good! Their pork was PERFECTLY cooked. Pasta was of high quality and not too heavy
- Dessert did not disappoint
- Wine list was impressive, beer list was ok, but I'm an annoying beer snob and have learned to not judge a restaurant by their beer list!
- The design of the restaurant is warm and inviting.
- Service was really great!

I'd definitely go back to this restaurant and if you haven't visited, experience it for yourself!
