We saw the short review in Seattle Magazine about this place (http://www.seattlemag.com/article/out-lunch-savatdee) and decided to try it and were delighted!
The restaurant opened about a year ago in a former gas station/restaurant. Outside one can still see the shape of the gas station. It is on the NW corner of 58th and Roosevelt. The 4-or-5-car parking lot is on the south side of the building, but neither of the 2 times did we find space for my husband's Honda Civic, so we parked on the street, once in front of the restaurant and the other time around the corner on the north side of the restaurant.
The place is small, probably holds a maximum of 40 people with 4 booths and 6+ tables, depending on the configuration. In addition, there is a bar when one enters straight ahead on the left. My husband was delighted to find Mac and Jack beer on tap.
The restaurant is open daily from noon to 2 and then 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. The website http://www.savatdeethai.com/ has the menus for both lunch and dinner. (The menu is in both English and Thai.) The first time we ordered Kai Yang, which is a freshly charbroiled Cornish game hen, with special Thai seasoning. It was amazing and plenty spicy at 1 star. We don't usually eat much meat, but we finished it!
We also ordered 2 vegetable dishes, a grilled eggplant dish with other veggies and Thai basil (also one star) which was truly delightful. We also had a stir fried mixed vegetable dish with a special house sauce. It too was very tasty. One came with tofu and I requested soft (not fried) tofu. I was very pleased that the dishes were a lot less greasy than in other Thai restaurants and the veggies were more numerous than the tofu. My husband also got fresh (spring) rolls. Since they make them to order (and not in advance), the could accommodate his request for no cilantro and vegetarian. We had way too much food and took home enough for lunch the next day. Service was a bit slow at first--we came at 5--but picked up once we ordered. The waiter was happy to explain the different dishes and make suggestions. He also said that they are very happy to make items to order to please the customers.
We asked him about the name, and I think he said that it meant "great." While other places in the US with the same name spell it with a W instead of a V (Sawatdee), they chose the different spelling to make it easier to find.
We came back a week later and the waiter remembered us. We again had one of the vegetable dishes and my husband ordered Pad Thai, with vegetables. He said that it was the best Paid Thai that he remembered eating, and it came with a LOT of vegetables on top. He got it with 2 stars even though he usually requests 3 stars at other Thai restaurants. 2 stars were enough here.
The Laotian dishes are on a separate sheet of paper, apart from the main menu. Be sure you see it. We plan to try some when we return with friends. You can pick up the menu as you enter on the right.
