I ran here from where my daughter was living. I last saw this place when I lived in Seattle. It definitely is something everyone who lives or visits Seattle has to see..

Discovery Park isn't the most spectacular example of Washington State coastline, but it is very nice in its own way. Provides a good introduction to the variety of terrain in western Washington State. You will pass through forest, meadow, sand dunes, more forest, and a beach (one stretch is rocky, while the other has fine sand). Difficulty of trails varies; if you're not an experienced hiker, it's best to use the shuttle bus to get to the beach and avoid steep hills and the long hike (paved, but it takes some time). Be careful when taking a longer section of the Loop trail, as much of it requires climbing very steep combination stairs/rooty hillside. As noted by other posters, arrive early in the day or in the early evening to observe birds. Take time to read the signs and learn about the history of Fort Worden and the local wildlife. Well worth a day trip with visitors to WA or even as a solo hike if you need to be in a relatively safe (trails tend to be well - trafficked during summer) to walk and think.

This is a good place for beach views of the Sound and on clear days there are views of the Olympics across the channel. Birding is excellent if you go early in the day. On weekdays there is a considerable hike to the lighthouse on the point. On weekends use the shuttle to save some wear and tear on the feet.

Note that there is a small parking area at the lighthouse point, but you MUST HAVE A PERMIT from the visitor center. These permits are limited as there are only a few spaces in the parking area PLUS YOU MUST HAVE A SPECIAL NEED such as shepherding a group of young children or handicap tagging.

To us this was worth the trip as we qualified for the handicap permit. We got the last one at around 11AM on a Monday morning and recycled it for another user at about 1:30PM. If we did not have the special permit we would have driven to the point and slowly turned around after finding no good views of the beach and sound. We would not have been able to hike the distance to the point. Plan wisely and get there early.

Mediocre trails, good signage. Boring views. The administrators are doing everything possible to keep visitors off the beach. The lighthouse is closed despite renovations at $ 600,000 (figure is 2/3 times what has been done). A decent walk if the weather is fine. Sad, shabby treatment of the buildings.

It was great to see folks taking advantage of a rural park in the midst of a city. Trails were manageable but a bit steeper than guidebooks seemed to indicate.
