“A cosy base in the heart of downtown Seattle”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

I stopped at the Green Tortoise the first time I came to Seattle, on a characteristically overcast, drizzly October weekend. The friendly staff immediately made me feel at home, checked me in and took me to my dorm room so I could drop my bags. The location is simply unbeatable - once I'd dropped my bags I walked immediately across the street to begin exploring Pike Place Market and the waterfront - allowing me to maximise the 3 days I had here on my first trip.

Beds are comfortable with acres of underbed storage (giant lockers with loops for a padlock) - the integrated power sockets and privacy curtains were also a plus. Rustic furnishings in the communal areas give the place a warm, cosy character and compared to many of the US hostels I've stayed in, an especially friendly feel. The bathrooms are well appointed and there is no shortage of hot water. Breakfast was good.

A wonderful hostel experience and, had they not been booked up on subsequent trips to Seattle, I would have stayed again. Recommended.

I'll be honest, I'm a bit of a princess when I travel and this was the first time I've ever stayed in a hostel. It was an awesome first time experience. Rooms were nice & clean & I liked that everyone had a bit of privacy with the curtain rail. Bathrooms, kitchen, common area all spotless & the staff at the front desk were really friendly & helpful. One of the girls even recommended a lovely Italian restaurant as we were in the mood for pasta! Ask them about it, it's really nice!

Really close by to everything, Pike Market is literally on your doorstep and you can catch the Monorail to the Needle! Also, check out BellTown, some really nice bars & restaurants there too.

Overall, first experience was nice and I have no problem recommending The Green Tortoise.

With no doubt, this is the best choice of Seattle's youth hostels.

The staffs are all very kind. Can't find another hotel (I mean HOTEL but not HOSTEL only) with such a great location in Seattle as Green Tortoise, you can just walk to Pike's market in just one minute! It also takes within 20 mins to talk to Space Needle!

However, the cooking smell would easily spread into the rooms where located above the self-cooking kitchen and make the whole room full of the fume of oil, and the noisy in the late night from other rooms was hard to avoid. Bring a earplug with you if you want to stay in a hostel.

Room Tip: avoid the rooms located above the kitchen

I stayed at the GT for 3 nights and it was a good experience. GT is located directly across the road from the famous pike st market- an amazing market to get lost in, watch the fish throwing and buy delicious food. My boyfriend and I loved this market and went there each day. Its pretty much right in the middle of the city too so v handy for buses or walking to all points of interest.
The hostel itself was good. Great free brekkie (diy eggs pancakes toast fruit) and 3 free dinners a week. My boyfriend and I shared a bed (easily big enough for 2) and saved a bit of cash each. Were in a dorm room of 5 beds (up to 10 ppl) so would recommend spending a bit more and staying in a smaller dorm if you can. The beds were good- each w own fan, light and curtains (but prob the hardest top bunk to get into ever!!).
Oh and the bathrooms were awesome. Massive, super clean w huge showers. (Girl tip- bring a shower cap if you want to keep hair dry- the shower head comes from straight up).
All in all, great location and clean comfy place- i recommend it.

Room Tip: Choose the bottom bunk! Top bunk is too hard to get in and out of!

This is my 1st stop upon touched down in Seattle, stayed for a night in a 6-female dorm.
Location: 1hr light rail ride from the airport & 5 mins walk from westlake station, 2 mins walk to the famous Pike Place market, Starbucks & Hard Rock Cafe is a min across the road. If you love outdoor stuff, Columbia and Mountain Hardwear is about 5 mins walk away, The north face is about 10-15mins walk away.

Safe: Be assured that you get a large locker under your bed (02x 70l backpack worth of space), you can purchased the 'green tortoise' lock for 5usd (you get 3usd refund if you return the lock).

Cleanliness & Service: Friendly staff and was glad to assist you - helping me to search for directions to where I am heading and even printed out for me with details! Clean and comfortable personal space in the room (curtains, 03 charging points, a fan and light for each bed). Toilet is clean and spacious. I got a lower deck and furthest away from the window, so it was pretty quiet and cosy.

Meals: breakfast is provided BUT eggs and pancake is Cook-it-yourself in the kitchen. Free dinner on some nights. Fruit punch and orange juice is available all around the clock in the kitchen. If you want to head out, many food places, Plenty of fresh seafood from the Pike place market (and they ship too, in USA only I think) found only 1 HALAL kebab restaurant (for Muslim friends)

Highlight (for me): I have only a day to spare before heading off to Mt Vernon, so I join Free Seattle Walking tour (that incl, history of Pike place market, the 1st Starbucks cafe after the Original was gone) which is arranged by the hostel.

The Lows: If you are allocated near the windows, expect some night noises (vehicles, people). Some stairs climbing to the reception (no lift).

Overall: I will recommend it to anyone whom don't wish to spend big bucks yet want comfort for accommodation. Single lady travel on own, this is a great deal.

Room Tip: Choose one that is not near the window for more quality sleep.

I stayed here for about a week. I liked free breakfast with egges and pancake. Shower room was clean. Location is great.
