Owner description: Pioneer Square Park, topped by an ornate pergola, is the site of the city's oldest settlement.

Tucked away in a neat section of Seattle is Pioneer Square. Beautiful flowers and lush greenery were in abundance, and in the center of the square is a tall totem pole. Marring the view of the totem pole on one side was a portable hot dog stand. Many homeless people were at the square, some panhandling. It was worth a visit although it was somewhat depressing.

First of all, this is a sad area. Full of homeless and many rundown buildings around the edges. That said it is a great area to see the styles and buildings of a hundred years ago. Lots of sculptures and art around. The area has lots of little parks and quiet places. Might not want to wander around at night but never felt uneasy during the day. The place to see America's first skid row and the first sky scraper west of the Mississippi. Lots of good restaurants and galleries. Admittedly, mixed with missions and bedrolls but still worth the time.

This place is dirty and full of homeless and junkies. We were passing by to visit the Klondike Museum and briefly stopped here. It must be the saddest part of Seattle.

Did not enjoy this part of our trip at all. We went here to visit the Klondike NHPark for my son. It was run down, dirty, full of homeless. Didn't really feel safe, but we went to Klondike just the same. Once inside, it was fine. It really is a creepy part of Seattle and in the middle of it all is a beautiful, peaceful, waterfall garden. Go figure. That was a pleasant surprise. Took some beautiful photos in there. We wanted to go back for the Underground and also to Chinatown for dim sum and the pinball museum. I realize that the last two attractions are not in Pioneer but close by in International District. We decided to skip it just the same. To close to Pioneer - figured it would be more of the same. It's a real shame.

There are two underground tours and the one we joined is called "Beneath the Street", the guide did a good job explaining the brief history of Seattle in a fun and informative way. The tour is an hour long and only $10 pp. The tour walked around the square and that's pretty much all it has to see. We took light rail from Westlake and was only a 5 minutes ride.
