I stayed here about five years ago and gave a very positive review. This stay was a little less positive. The Edgewater is classified as a 4 star hotel -- as such, I think it is only an average, overall, 4 star.
My college aged daughter and I had two one-night stays here last week, both before and after our trip to Victoria on the Victoria Clipper. The location of this hotel is absolutely ideal for a trip on the Clipper -- that pier is literally right next door, and this was a huge plus for us.
Our first night we had a second floor, city-view room. For me, it is all about getting a good night's sleep. This room had too much light from sources I could not dim, had noise from outside and the bedding was too light for me -- like sleeping with two sheets on top (no blanket or duvet in the room). Although I did not sleep well at all, I should note that my daughter did, so these issues will not be a problem for every traveler.
Five years ago, I thought the newly remodeled decor was cute. Now, it appears a bit worn, shabby and depressing. Our first night there, we elected to have drinks and snacks during happy hour. We entered the restaurant, but since my daughter is not 21, so we were directed out of the restaurant and into the hotel lobby. We were fine with lounging in the lobby, but the service in the lobby was disappointing. We received our appetizers 10 minutes ahead of our happy hour beverages. And, we had no silverware, napkins, or plates for the appetizers. After 3 or 4 minutes, we did receive silverware and napkins but never did get appetizer plates. One of the appetizers we ordered was very good and the other was a dud.
Our second night, after our boat trip, was a very good experience. For this night, we were given a larger room on the 3rd floor, a junior suite. This room had a spare blanket for the bed, and the room was darker and quiet, so I slept really well. Dinner in the dining room was also great. The food was excellent and the server was friendly and competent. If our entire Edgewater experience was based on this night alone, I would have given a higher rating. But, unfortunately, we had a problem the next morning, too.
On checkout, we asked for a cab. Another party just ahead of us, two businessmen, also asked for a cab. I overheard the bellhop telephone for a cab (I assumed he had already called for the other cab). Five minutes later, only one cab arrived (for the two men). We waited another ten minutes but another cab never arrived. At this point, the shuttle driver ran out and put us on his shuttle. So, we did get to our location on time, which is great, but I think the bellhop messed up here and got the shuttle driver to cover for him.
