“Time for a Renovation”

The Westmark Skagway is reminiscent of an older Motel 6 or 8 in the Lower States. It was clean and the bed was comfortable but it did not illicit the "Gee, this is a nice place" comment. The location is good (but how bad can it be in a town that is 4 streets wide by 22 streets long? Ate one breakfast in the restaurant....buffet food was O.K., staff seemed indifferent. Noticed that the art work (a print of a local scene) was in every room and most of the public areas. Overall....not great but it did the job.

Skagway Westmark Inn. Had a one night stay in this average, clean, and functional hotel. Two soft, double beds with firm pillows. The walls were paper thin and you could hear your neighbours chatting and watching TV etc. Bathroom was simple but adequate. It was a non-smoking room and clean. The hotel had internet service for $7.00 a night and unlimited divices/computers could access it. It was slow but good enough to get a few emails off. Food in the ‘restaurant’ food was suspect. For $145 a night in a remote location, it passed. Staff were helpful and friendly, small town nice.

It IS the home of The Famous Skagway Dancing Bartenders!!! This is the resturant on the main street. The bartenders are in such good spirits (pun intended) that they dance behind the bar. The music that plays here will make you want to dance too! Standard American Fare for a decent price.

This is no Plaza Hotel, but neither is it a fleabag joint in Armpit, Wherever.

This charming motel is nestled in to the historical gold mining town of Skagway. It is a short walk to the WP&YR train station, the cruise ship pier, and the ferry that will take you along the Alaska water highway.

The room is small, a little tired, but so what...because it is impeccably clean and well furnished with a great bed (ask for more pillows and the staff comes a-running with them), toiletries, an old-fashioned but serviceable TV, a coffee-tea maker, a fan, and lots of drawers for clothes and other items. The shower is a delight after so many camp showers.

We were lucky to grab the last room at the inn, because the skies had opened and we couldn't bear the idea of setting up our tent in the rain.

Settle in here for a couple of days (uses your AAA card for a great discount) and then explore the town. Go out to the old Gold Rush cemetery in the long light of the afternoon...walk up to Reid Falls...for a most magical moment in your life.

Go up Dyea Road and explore the Slide Cemetery...and then watch salmon spawning (in August) on the tidal flats. Maybe you will catch sight of a big old bear.

The train trip is a MUST-DO! Seriously. Dip into the savings for this trip and you will be among less than 5% of all tourists anywhere who have done so. What an adventure.

Back to the motel, parking is not on the street, but on a gravel lot very close by. There is a liquor store, and a short walk will take you to all manner of shops, including the Alaska T-shirt store.

Great little place, great location, and very reasonable priced. 5-Star in my books!

Room Tip: Be sure to show your AAA card for a discount on your room fees. And this is a temperate rain forest...

Very hard and dated bed, Television was lower then the bed and couldnt actually watch it from a laying down position. 3 telephone calls at 10 am to tell me check out is 10 am, where as most places in the WORLD check out is at 11. Few, if any American workers and what appears to be only J1 visa workers, which in this economy appears to be unexceptable. Also the online rate is 119 and at the desk the lowest rate is 135, which is fine, I could have used their computer room to book a room in their hotel and saved 15 bucks which i could have used for WIFI which is charged at a high rate. Rooms could use a serious remodel to bring them out of 1970. Will not stay here again. The rooms were VERY clean but didnt make up for the short comings in general.

Room Tip: DO NOT stay on the bottom floor, the stairs are noisy!

After having 3 incredible nights of 4 star luxury on the Holland America Volendam, we were totally unprepared for the "rustic" accommodations we were provided. The rooms were not available upon arrival which made for a long couple of hours trying to find a place to wait. It was cold, windy and raining heavily, so walking around was a poor option. The guest rooms were average size with the usual desk, chair, dresser, in the room "closet" and separate bathroom. The overall impression was dark and uninviting. We could hear muffled sounds on either side of our 2nd floor room.

Westmark is owned by Holland-America Cruise Lines and caters to the cruise-ship traffic. It is conveniently located just off the main drag and is perfectly adequate, though rustic, for independent travelers. They have an unadvertised guest laundry and business center. The restaurant is well above average, though often crowded with ship traffic. They offer a hearty breakfast buffet and full dinner menu with full bar. I found the dining manager to be efficient, courteous, and helpful. In the big city, this would be a AAA two diamond hotel, but in Skagway, it is a palace. Beware of one catch: their antiquated reservation system only reserves by name, not room type.

Room Tip: If you want 2 beds, call ahead, otherwise you get 1 bed.
