“Great place to stay in Skagway”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

I love these rooms, they make you feel like you are part of the history of Skagway. The owners are very kind and helpful. They stored all our luggage while we were on our 5-day hike of the Chilkoot, they provide transportation to and from the ferry and the airport (and to the trailhead if you need it), and they have a really nice breakfast (included as part of the cost of the room). It was warm when we were in Skagway, so all the windows were opened - the room was nice and cool but we could hear people talking outside. We also found a few things in the room that could have used a bit of repair. But overall it was a great stay.

Room Tip: Choose rooms with a bath and bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper.

It's become a regular stomping ground when we come into Skagway for a treat. We try out a different room each time. Our favorites to date are Cleo and Kitty. It doesn't get much more authentic than this. The wall are thin so you have to deal with late night people laughing in the halls with only paper thin walls separating you from the party. The beds are mighty soft. I could complain about back aches and noise, but hey, that's the way it was back in 1897 and my young daughter and I have zero complaints. On the contrary, we come back for more. My kid is all about exploring the garden and going room to room to discover antiquities. I'm all about the best breakfast served to me since I was a kid. Karl, our host, is awesome. Wonderfully accommodating and I'm sure he expends a lot of time dreaming up breakfast. Has yet to misguide us on quests for new adventures. The very best in town.

Room Tip: The rooms are all so very different and suited to individual tastes and needs. There's one with...

This was such a disappointment to us; we had stopped in Skagway about 10 days prior to our stay and went to the hotel to request a pick-up from the ferry. When we arrived 10 days later no one met us.
The inn is in great need of some modern touches and some deep cleaning. To the horror of the owner our bathroom had not been serviced and he cleaned it himself. However, the industrial-sized shower gel/shampoo container on the floor of the shower did not enhance the appearance of the bathroom. There were none of the touches that one would expect in an inn of this type - no conditioner, body lotion, tissues etc.
The bedroom - Alice - was roomy but was in need of serious maintenance as the window frames were rotting and unmoveable and the curtains were not properly fixed. There was no hospitality tray nor even any bottled water. The room was far too hot and we couldn`t turn the radiator off.
We had hoped to eat in the restaurant but this was obviously closed as the owner recommended that we ate across the road at The Skagway Brewing Company where they had a special offer on Burgers! We checked it out but it was not the sort of place where we would eat and we opted instead for the very good Starfire Thai Restaurant.
We had also expected a better breakfast - the waitress was surly and uncommunicative and the table had not been comletely laid. Apart from a very nice cheese souffle the breakfast was self- service complete with a very large jar of cheap supermarket jam - surely a historic inn would serve jam in small dishes and of better quality.
Some guests commented on the lovely garden - however, in June, this was full of weeds and did not give a good impression to an outsider.
We certainly could not recommend this inn to British guests as it is trading merely on the fact that it is old! Perhaps Americans are more inclined to overlook the faults because of its vintage.

Within walking distance of train. Offer pick-up a airport. Rooms are very small and beds are tight to the wall making it difficult to get in and out of if sleeping next to the wall. Double bed was not comfortable for 2 people. Our washroom was very large and clean. Innkeeper Hannah was friendly but the owner did not go out of his way to speak to guests and make them feel at home. Breakfast was poorly organized and one person at our table did not get breakfast until everyone else was finished and then the order was wrong. Breakfast food for self serve were not replenished so arriving later in serving time meant limited selection. Glad we only booked one night.

Room Tip: Pick a room with twin beds rather than double if sharing room.

My first suggestion is Clean this place from head to toe. Our visit was last minute and very disappointing even though the operators were very nice, overworked and stressed. It appears the cleaning staff is very young and inexperienced. Our room probably had not seen a vacuum in weeks or more. The carpet was filthy and needs to be steam cleaned to get out all the stains. Broken furniture with missing hardware, worn bed clothing and soiled carpet does not give the appearance of an antique boutique, it just means junky!! Hotel and Restaurant Impossible would make a good stop here to help the owners out. This place is way overpriced for what it offers.

The Skagway Inn is a great place to stay if your in Skagway over night. My wife and I spent 5 nights there and felt like locals by the time we left. There's a surprising lot to do in and around this very small town - hiking, biking, eating, drinking, hiking, etc., and it's all beautiful. The Inn itself offers a lot and is mostly great - the bed was fine, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the call to the town's history preserved in the Inn are all great.

Be prepared though for some small town problems when staying there though - I think of it more as a lack of attention to or ability to keep up with some of the small details. There were some holes and cracks in wall/windows/ceilings and many of the corners had cobwebs and/or dead insects. The free breakfast was fine, but (and noticing this is probably a product of the length of our stay) there was very little variety. I'm sure there are budgetary concerns driving some of this, as Skagway only has visitors from late May-early September and the Inn has to factor an entire year of ancillary expenses.

This said, though, I would stay there again if in Skagway. Karl and his family and employees are great people to meet and very knowledgeable about the area and the Inn in rustic and charming, including the gardens and outside seating.

Room Tip: The bed in Birdie was more comfortable than the one in Cleo.

The history of the Inn and the individual unique rooms made for a very nice experience at a reasonable price. The garden made for a nice/quite place for a cup of coffee. Also check out the owners retail store down the street--and negotiate with her for a good price. Their food was very good as well.
