Mile Zero Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #4 of 5 Skagway B&B and Inns
Reviewed July 7, 2011

We bounced around from bed and breakfast to hotel to bed and breakfast, because the rooms were all booked when we were in Skagway. But we managed to get one night here. The rooms are clean and inviting, the owner, Tara, is joyful and accommodating. I had to dash out in the morning to catch a tour, and she was gracious about allowing me to settle my bill later in the day. Breakfast was fine, although would not bring me back there in and of itself. The gardens around the house are full of beautiful perennials and there are covered porches -- good in the rain, although we only had sun. We stayed in the room titled "Dawson," and my only complaint is that the shower-tub is so narrow, about the narrowest I've ever seen. Minor complaint, really. The location is just out of the main area of town, but still well within walking distance for everything.

Room Tip: Book early if you're going for the Fourth of July!!!

Our first time in a B&B and this one has converted us. The separate entrance and ensuite bathroom made us feel like we had the privacy benefits of a motel/hotel while the common entrance with the friendly family members made us feel like we were welcomed parts of the household. A great experience all around.

Mile Zero is absolutely wonderful. Great location (but Skagway is kind of small anyway). Massive bedroom with ensuite, with doors that open out onto the verandah. The housesitters were absolutely lovely. One-off, small fee for wireless internet. Breakfast each morning was nice, with nice homemade snacks made to enjoy and good, strong coffee. Skagway is a really cute little town, and I would happily stay at the Mile Zero again.

On booking the b&b we were told to use the courtesy phone at the ferry dock and we would be picked up on arrival at 11pm. Despite doing this no one came to collect us. A kind man from a nearby b&b gave us a lift. No-body met us at the door on arrival or showed us to our rooms but the room keys were left out on a table. The room was cold and we had to sleep in our fleeces and socks the first night as we didnt know how to work the room heating system. The tv was state of the art but again we did not know how to work it properly as we were not very IT literate despite the type written list of instructions. Does anyone know anyone who reads the manuals for their tv? Not me! The room itself was very clean with its own private exit. The heating did work when it was explained to us the next day. A simple meet and greet from the owner would have gone a long way to making our stay more comfortable and welcoming.

This was a nice clean place with great beds and a reasonably friendly host but had the feel of a hotel rather than B&B. We stayed in B&B's all through Alaska and this was the only place that charged for internet (a pet hate of mine!), charged for under 5's, provided a continental breakfast only (cereal, toast, muffins) and had no laundry facilities. With the charges for the kids, Mile Zero was also the most expensive place we stayed at (probably because of the limited accommodation available in Skagway) by $30.

We stayed at Mile Zero for three nights. We got there late on the ferry from Juneau, arriving at around 10:00. I had talked with Tara, who told me the key would be available for our room. When we went into our room, which had an outside entrance as well as an entrance from the inner hallway, we were very pleasantly surprised at how large the room was. The B&B was designed by Tara's parents, who used to operate the B&B, and in fact were there when we were there. They did a wonderful job of creating a bed and breakfast and still giving room for some solitude. We stayed in B&B's all through our 3 week trip through Alaska, and Mile Zero gave us the best combination of enough interaction with the owners along with room to be on our own.

We have stayed at Mile Zero twice, each time with two early teenage grandchildren. The kids loved the place as much as we did. When we return to Skagway for our next visit, we look forward to staying at Mile Zero again. It's walkable distance to "downtown," the harbor area, the trail to Dewey Lake, and even the airport. The hosts are extremely friendly, go out of their way to be helpful and possess a wealth of knowledge about both Skagway itself and the vast area beyond the town.
