During a family vacation to Alaska, we rented two rooms at the Sgt Preston Lodge for two nights in late July 2008. We were travelling independently (not on a cruise or with a guide) through southeast Alaska.

We found this hotel to be clean; the staff was very helpful. They picked us up at the ferry terminal when we arrived after an overnight sailing from Juneau and took us to the terminal at 6 am in plenty of time to catch our 7 am ferry.

The rooms at Sgt Preston's are clean and the beds are quite comfortable. There are live plants in the rooms.

The hotel staff recommended excellent restaurants and entertainment. The "Days of 98" revue is wonderful. Sgt. Preston staff recommended the evening show which takes place after the cruise ships leave and involves mock gambling. I was even selected to participate in the show!

Good restaurants nearby include Sweetooths Cafe for breakfast and Northern Lites for dinner. There is also a grocery within 2 blocks for snacks and picnic supplies. Wine and liquor need to be purchased at a liquor store across from the White Pass and Yukon Railroad's ticket building.

People in adjoining rooms had driven to Skagway via the Alaska highway. This is an excellent property where you can meet other independent travelers visiting Alaska.

We stayed here on our way through as we needed to catch a 7AM Ferry. Rooms were clean. Lobby is homey with a dog laying about. We were only there one night but would stay again.
After seeing one review about lost reservations I double checked before we left via Email and got a prompt response.
Our room opened onto State Ave. Noise really wasn't an issue as they roll up the sidewalks after the last cruise ship leaves.

Even though we had a confirmation number, they totally screwed up our reservation. When we arrived the front desk worker was very confused and told us to come back shortly when the manager would be available. He assured us they had 2 rooms for us. When we returned, we were informed they had lost our reservation. They did book us at another hotel, but seemed to think they did not need to apologize and that everything was fine. Saying "I'm sorry, we screwed up" would have helped.

And yes, the lobby is disgusting.

Now remember what town we're talking about. Skagway sees close to 1 million tourists from May through September. Then the town shrinks to maintenance mode: only a few hundred hard core residents stick around for the other 8 months. Given that situation, one might expect a hotel to turn its rooms over at the rate McDonalds turns tables.

Sgt. Preston's, mercifully, does not try to. It is relaxed. The lobby is quaint. The staff are colorful and friendly locals. The rooms are clean, most being freshly painted. It is centrally located (though how could it not be in a town covering 20 blocks!). I got a very good price just by calling them.

Sgt. Preston's is funkier than a Marriot Courtyard, for sure. But since you're going this far into the wilds, you should consider your stay as a pleasant adventure typical of the neighborhood. I enjoyed it as such. And I much prefer it to the competition, particularly since there is only one other hotel in town to choose!

  • Liked — The price was good
  • Disliked — My room windows didn't open, and it got too warm (in Alaska!)

My first impression of Sgt. Preston's Lodge came in the lobby, which was more cluttered than most motel lobbies. It became clear that the owner and his family was using it as a living space/storage area, with family members seated around the TV right next to the postcard rack. The owner was nice enough, though, with helpful tips for catching the ferry the next morning and connecting to the internet.

My next impression came in our room (19), which smelled smoky even though it was designated non-smoking by a piece of paper taped to the door. The 2 queen beds were comfortable but seemed crammed into a room designed to hold something smaller. There were a refigerator and a microwave, plus a large TV stand, but that didn't leave us much space to put our things. The room opens directly onto the street (Broadway, the main street in Skagway) where we were instructed to park. The doorknob had a lock, which worked, but the sliding lock above it was broken and there were no other locks. There is no air conditioning.

My final impression came from the internet. It costs $6.95 a day, which is not included in the price of the room (hourly or weekly plans are also available). Once you're connected, it's slow and not especially easy to use (you have to create an account with local utility AP&T, then log in to that account each time you want to get online). Although the other reviews mention free internet in the lobby, the manager did not tell us about that option, so it may no longer be offered.

However, it does have its good points. It's within a few minutes' walk of the downtown shops, attractions, and restaurants, which offer plenty of variety as long as you're there at the same time the cruise ships are (once the ships leave, nearly everything closes). You can drive to the AMHS ferry terminal in less than 5 minutes. If you are taking the morning ferry to Haines or Juneau, you can check in and get your tickets and lane assignment for your vehicle the night before. This saves about an hour the next morning.

So overall it wasn't a bad place to stay for the night, but for the price we paid (about $110) we expected something a little better.

  • Liked — Good location within walking distance of everything
  • Disliked — Broken door lock, internet plan, clutter, price

An excellent room at a great price. If you can stand some clutter in the lobby and a bit of a homey atmosphere, this is super. The rooms are not spectacular, but they are clean, spacious and comfortable. The location is perfect for Skagway and the people are very nice.
