Used Chilkoot for the White Pass and Yukon Railroad tour from Skagway whilst docked there on a cruise in September 13. We made a considerable saving over the cruise excursion plus there were only 12 of us on a minibus not a full coach load of 50 either.

We followed the easy directions provided and found our guide 'Bruce' only a couple of minutes after getting of the ship. After checking us off his list, he directed us to our minibus where we had a 10-15min wait for the rest of the passengers to arrive.

Once on route, Bruce continued to give us loads of local and historical information and answered all questions as best he could. He stopped of on route to Carcross on numerous occasions for photos and to impart more info. At Carcross we had the Chicken BBQ lunch, then went for a look round before going on a dogsled ride which was excellent, and learnt loads from the handlers who were professional dogsledders.

Bruce was brilliant throughout the tour upto dropping us off at the Canadian Border where we caught the train back to Skagway. We had our own carriage on the train, which gave us all loads of room as there was only 12 of us. Saw some amazing scenery throughout the tour.

If you do the tour with bus first and train back then you need to sit on the righthand side both times to get the best views.

We have taken this ride twice. This last August, we took our granddaughters and they were not as enthusiastic as we were but I am sure they will remember the rest of their lives. The views are amazing and going with Chilkoot Charters gave us a train car with only a handful of people on board. This time, I was on the outside platform 90% of the time taking some great pictures! I've had frostbite several times so I dressed VERY warm and it was well worth it.

Passed on cruise ship tour and called these folks direct (toll free). Took the bus first to Fraser B.C.-guide was outstanding, only about a dozen people on the mini bus-rode train back to Skagway. We had a train car to ourselves-same 12 people from bus. Lots of room to move around and take pictures. Cruise buses and train cars were packed. This is first class operation from making reservations, to picking you up at the dock, knowledgeable and entertaining guides. You will not be disappointed.

We took the "Yukon Rail and Bus Excursion" with the rail portion to Fraser first, then the bus tour to Caribou Crossing/Emerald Lake and back to Skagway. It was cheaper than what was offered by the cruise ship and better, in my opinion. For example, Chilkoot seems to get assigned a rail car for itself; we noticed many of the cars filled, but ours was only 1/3 filled. This gave us room in the car to move from one side to the other for different views and lots of room on the platforms outside for clear photos of the spectacular views.
The BBQ lunch was at Caribou Crossing and at the same place as the Cruise ship tours since we ran into people we knew from the ship-arranged tour. There is an excellent display there of a surprisingly extensive collection of stuffed animals and birds, including Ice Age animals recovered from the tundra. This is also where the "dog-sled" (a wheeled cart) ride would be if you paid for it. But you can visit the sled-dog-in-training area even without buying a ride.
The bus ride back was very scenic, and based on reading the other reviews, Chilkoot must hire only very interesting bus drivers. Ours was Stanley, a friendly, engaging young woman with many stories and an interesting past. One of the highlights of the trip back was seeing a mother bear and her 2 cubs. We pulled over and viewed them for about 15 minutes while they checked us out and then ambled across the road, right in front of the bus!
Back in town, Stanley gave us some hints on places to visit from where she dropped us off for the rest of our port time.
Highly recommend Chilkoot, though I admit I do not have experience with other operators. But price-wise they are better than the cruise lines and right in there with the other private tour operators.

On Sep 12th we took the train from Skagway to Fraser, arranged by Chilkoot. What a great experience. Great views. In Fraser, our group of approx. 14 got onto a small bus being driven by our guide Alyssa. (She dropped us at the train station). She drove us to Caribou Crossing giving us local and historical info on the way. We had a good lunch there and rode a sled being pulled by the Iditarod dogs. From there we headed back to Skagway. Alyssa gave us more info. She even stopped at Emerald Lake and had us skip rocks, giving the winner a prize. When is the last time you skipped rocks? She also took us to a local ice cream shop in Carcross. Great ice cream. This was an unforgettable experience thanks to Alyssa and Chilkoot Charters. A++++
