“Great Tour of the White Pass Railroad”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

We booked this tour during our recent cruise stop in Skagway. Selected the 8:30 option to take the bus up and the train down. Much better option since the train tends to be less crowded coming down. The bus also stopped at a few sites for pictures.

Driver even pulled over when we saw a bear on the side of the road.

The train is offered on it's own or through ship excursions however, the guide was great going up to the pass. Well worth it to hear the details about the history of the area.

“Great trip & views (shame about the guide)”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

This was a great excursion, we did the Bennett Scenic Journey, which meant 5 hours on the WP&YR train via Bennett, British Columbia all the way to Carcross, Yukon with a lunch stop. Once there we were picked up and transferred back to Skagway with a few stops for photo opportunities.
We booked it separately through Chilkoot directly, rather than through NCL.
If you like photography, then this is a great trip - I spent most of my time on the platform taking photos of the stunning views. Shame you can't hear the train guide when you're outside.
The only real negative was the long pointless stories from our guide James on the return part of the trip (he apparently doesn't usually do this particular tour). Half of the passengers in the mini-bus couldn't speak English, a quarter were asleep and the other quarter of us were NOT interested in his long preaching stories which had NO relevance to what we were seeing - it's a shame, because otherwise it was a wonderful day.

“Excellent day”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Loved this tour! We did the train first, followed by the tour in a van to Carcross for lunch, and on through some of the most beautiful mountain and lake scenery. Our guide, Kevin, was fabulous. He made numerous stops for photos, and stopped to let us watch a bear wandering near the road. He was very patient; we never felt rushed. He also provided excellent commentary, including a very easily understood and interesting history of the area. We happened to have a perfect day weather-wise, with no breeze at all, so the reflections on the lakes were like a mirror. People have told me that this is not usually the case, that the wind usually comes up in the afternoon, so doing the van ride first and coming back on the train might be a good idea.

The train was very comfortable; we were in the last car on the train, which was nice since you could stand on the rear platform and have an all-around view.

The stop for lunch was nice and relaxing, and you have an option of going on a dog-sled ride. We did not do that, but still found plenty to keep us entertained. First was a BBQ chicken lunch, which was really very good. There is a large museum with stuffed Alaskan animals, which I'm not usually into, but it was well done, and gave an opportunity to see these amazing (and often huge) animals up close. They also have a small petting zoo. If you don't do the dog-sled ride, you can still go to the area where the dogs are kept and watch the different teams resting and getting ready to go. It is pretty interesting to see how eager the dogs are to run. A few people in our group did do the ride, and said it was fun, although very dusty as the dogs kicked up the dry soil as they ran. They also have a good-sized gift shop, and an ice cream shop.

Would definitely do this tour again.

“Enjoyed Scenic Views”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Our group of 13 on the Island Princess reserved in advance the Chilkoot Tours 3.5 hour trip up White Pass by rail, with return in a mini bus, departing at 7:30 am. Once off the ship in Skagway, our Chilkoot Tours driver met our group just outside the security entrance at the end of the pier. We had a mini bus to ourselves, and he first gave us a short sight-seeing tour of the town, before dropping us at the station. We were assigned to the last car of the train. We were disappointed that the train car was so full already, because all but one of the seats on the left side were already taken. You definitely want to sit on the left side of the train on the way up (and the right side coming down), so I suggest that you ask your driver to drop you off at the train as early as possible so you have a shot at getting those seats. There are exterior viewing platforms at the ends of the cars that are good for photography, but you cannot walk between cars when the train is underway. Each car has its own rest room. When the train stopped at the top of the pass, a Canadian official walked through the car to briefly check each passport, and then we got off the train. A Chilkoot mini bus was waiting for our group, and we had a nice drive back down the pass, stopping at several scenic overlooks and a waterfall to take photos. The driver dropped some of our group in town, and took the rest back to the ship.

“Bus to the Yukon; ride railroad back”
Reviewed August 1, 2013

James, in his Irish jargon, entertained us as he showed us the sights of Skagway, up White Pass, into the Yukon. We stopped many times for photo-ops. My husband and I rode the train both ways in 2006 so decided on a different adventure for our family group. Lunch at Caribou Crossing was better and nicer than expected. The taxiodermy Museum is awesome; also ice cream cones at a little shop, and many animals to amuse both small people and grown-ups. Riding the train back down in the afternoon provided the best views. (Limit your beverage intake and take along t.p. Limited facilities.) Snacks are a good idea, too. Weather was wonderful. Smoke from a fire within the Yukon obscured the views somewhat.
